Things just keep getting worse for the American worker, and by implication U.S. economy, where as we have shown many times before, [for too many people] it pays just as well to sit back and collect disability and various welfare and entitlement checks than to work.
The best manifestation of this: the number of people not in the labor force which in March soared by a massive 663,000 to a record 90 million Americans who are no longer even looking for work.

The slaying took place in Aguila, Arizona.
On April 1, an illegal immigrant was arrested for shooting and killing a mother after she denied the man a romantic relationship with her teenage daughter.

According to police, after showing up at the house of 31-year-old Maria Saucedo in pursuit of her 13-year-old daughter, 25-year-old Jose Zarate pulled out a rifle and shot Saucedo in the chest in front of her daughter. Deputies attempted to perform CPR on the victim who died at the scene.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio's deputies caught and arrested Zarate on April 3 at his home where he returned after fleeing the scene. They verified Zarate is a non-U.S. citizen who has been living in the country without proper authorization. He has been booked into jail on 2nd Degree Murder, 2 counts of Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Weapon by a Prohibited Person.

I hate to burst anyone’s bubble, but all the talk that Gov. Jerry Brown (D) has basically “fixed” California by balancing the budget through a tax hike on high earners seems laughably off-base, at least to this Los Angeles native.

So before this meme gets out of hand, let’s unpack the confusion behind the premature Golden State cork-popping. Dust off those analogy skills that brought you such pleasure on the old SAT, and all will be revealed.
Here we go. “Balanced budget” is to “societal renewal” as:
A) “H2O” is to “water”
B) “Atlantic” is to “ocean”
C) “Night” is to “day”
D) “Ante” is to “poker”
If you picked A, you think a balanced budget is basically a formula for renewal. If you picked B, you’re saying balanced budgets are a way of putting a name to this renewal — as if achieving fiscal balance were one way a society can renew itself. Option C means you think such renewal inevitably follows the emergence of balanced budgets, as night follows day.
But a moment’s reflection should convince you that all of this is wrong.
The best analogy is poker — because in the real world, when a state (or nation) gets its fiscal house in order, that’s just the ante. It’s table stakes. It’s the thing we can all stipulate: The first duty of a government is not to go broke.
But that hardly fulfills some bold aspiration.
Tidy accounting says almost nothing that matters about the health of a society. For a state such as California (and a country such as the United States), fiscal prudence is merely a prerequisite for a broader agenda of renewal. And California, like the country, is still desperately seeking a real renewal agenda.

No one’s saying the politics of reform are easy. But seen in this light, Brown’s ability to win voter approval to temporarily raise marginal rates on top earners past 13 percent (and thus to 55% or more, once Obama’s income and health-care tax hikes are included) is hardly a cure for what ails the Golden State.

President Obama’s hometown of Chicago still goes by the old nickname “Windy City.” But after three miserable decades of strict gun control and permanent Democratic rule, Chicago has cemented its reputation as America’s "Bloody City."
No amount of statistical whitewashing can cover up the stains of the Left’s ideological failures there. But as Obama continues to wage war on law-abiding gun owners, his home team is trying its hardest to spread smiley-face lies upon damned lies to downplay Chicago homicide statistics.
On Monday, April Fools’ Day, Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Police superintendent Garry McCarthy held a press conference to tout a “dramatic” drop in the city’s homicide rate. The headlines read: “March homicides drop dramatically in Chicago” (USA Today), “Murders fall 42% in America’s deadliest city: Chicago” (NBC News), and “March homicides drop 69% in Chicago” (Las Vegas Sun).”
Emanuel trumpeted the drop as a “good sign.” He hyped statistics to the Associated Press showing that first-quarter 2013 murders in Chicago are tied with numbers from the same time period in 2009. Murders decreased 69% compared with the same month last year; first-quarter homicides fell by 42% compared with the same time frame last year. Emanuel insisted: “We are clearly having an impact on the homicides.”
But it’s all in how you slice, dice, and spin it, of course.
Let’s face it. Gun-grabbers in Democratic-dominated cities have an institutional incentive to fudge the numbers. In New York City, which rivals Chicago when it comes to out-of-control gun-control regulations, a New York Police Department whistleblower recently exposed systemic manipulation of crime data.
As anti-Second Amendment crusader Michael Bloomberg made the rounds last spring touting the Big Apple as “the safest big city in America,” an internal NYPD report confirmed that more than a dozen crime reports had been manipulated — including felonies downgraded and incident reports deep-sixed — to lower the crime rate.

As punishment for exposing the tampering and corruption, the whistle-blowing officer, Adrian Schoolcraft, who secretly taped the manipulation, was suspended and forced into a psych ward. He’s still fighting for justice and has never received an apology.
