A new photograph obtained exclusively by ABC News showing the bloodied back of George Zimmerman's head, which was apparently taken three minutes after he shot and killed Trayvon Martin…

* FOLKS…. NOTICE… I HAVEN'T POSTED MUCH ON THE ZIMMERMAN CASE, BUT FOR CHRIST'S SAKE, THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS LATEST MSM STORY ISN'T THAT FOLKS LIKE YOU AND I ARE GETTING "NEW" NEWS. NOPE. WE KNEW THAT ZIMMERMAN HAD SUFFERED INJURIES AND I KNEW THAT THE INJURIES WERE TO ZIMMERMAN'S FACE AS WELL AS THE BACK OF HIS HEAD, BUT HOW MANY TENS OF MILLIONS OF AMERICANS WHO RELY UPON THE MSM HAD BEEN TOLD TO DOUBT SUCH REPORTS.

The exclusive image shows blood trickling down the back of Zimmerman's head from two cuts. It also shows a possible contusion forming on the crown of his head. The original police report that night notes that the back of Zimmerman's head was wet, and that he was bleeding from the nose and head.

Zimmerman told police that night that he shot and killed the teenager in self-defense after Martin punched him and pounced on him. Zimmerman told police that Martin then bashed his head into the concrete sidewalk during the altercation that took place in the tidy middle-class development of the Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, Fla.

In police surveillance video obtained last month by ABC News, Zimmerman's wounds are not apparent…

The Congressional Budget Office said Thursday that 45 million people in 2011 received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, a 70% increase from 2007.

CBO said the number of people receiving the benefits, commonly known as food stamps, would continue growing until 2014.

CBO said...20% “of the growth in spending can be attributed to temporarily higher benefit amounts enacted in the” 2009 stimulus law.

CBO said the number of people receiving benefits is expected to fall after 2014 because the economy will be improving.

“Nevertheless, the number of people receiving SNAP benefits will remain high by historical standards,” the agency said.

It estimated that 34 million people, or 1 in 10 U.S. residents, would receive SNAP benefits in 2022 “and SNAP expenditures, at about $73 billion, will be among the highest of all non-health-related federal support programs for low-income households.”

[B]y April [of this year] there were 10.8 million people on disability, according to Social Security Administration data released this week. Even after accounting for all those who've left the program — mainly because they hit retirement age or died — that's up 53% from a decade ago.

To be sure, disability rolls have grown steadily as a share of the workforce since the 1990s. The main causes of this broader trend, according to a study by economists David Autor and Mark Duggan, are the loosening of eligibility rules by Congress in 1984, the rise in disability benefits relative to wages, and the fact that more women have entered the workforce, making them eligible for disability.

Their research found that the aging of the population has contributed only modestly to the program's growth.

But the big factor in the recent surge is the slow pace of the economic recovery after the severe recession. That has kept the unemployment rate above 8% and created an enormous pool of long-term unemployed and discouraged workers. More than 5 million people have been jobless for 27 weeks or more, nearly twice the previous high set in 1983, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"We see a lot of people applying for disability once their unemployment insurance expires," said Matthew Rutledge, a research economist at Boston College's Center for Retirement Research. The number of applications last year was up 24% compared with 2008, Social Security Administration data show.

[T]he [labor] participation rate — the share of working-age people who have or are looking for a job — has fallen to 63.8% compared with 65.7% at the start of Obama's term. (Ironically, this drives down the unemployment rate, which simply measures how many people are looking for work but haven't been able to find it. When people quit looking or sign up for disability benefits, they no longer count as unemployed.)

[T]he explosive growth in enrollment is not only increasing the financial strain on the Social Security Disability Insurance trust fund — which is scheduled to go bankrupt in 2018 — it's boosting costs for Medicare as well, since SSDI enrollees can qualify for Medicare after two years. SSDI now accounts for more than 16% of Social Security's budget and more than 15% of Medicare's.

The Taliban claimed responsibility Friday for downing a Black Hawk helicopter in southern Afghanistan.

"Yesterday (Thursday) evening Taliban fighters shot down a helicopter and killed all its passengers in Khanashen Dewalak area near Garmsir, southern Helmand province," a Taliban spokesman wrote to CNN.

The helicopter's four crew members, all of them American, are believed to be dead, a U.S. military official said.

Measles cases in the United States hit a 15-year high in 2011...

The CDC said in 2000 that home-grown measles had been eliminated, but cases continued to arrive in the United States from abroad.

Measles is highly contagious and is transmitted when an infected person breaths, coughs or sneezes, Schuchat said. The disease can be spread even before an infected person has developed the rash from the virus.

"You can catch measles just by being in a room where a person with measles has been even after that person has left the room," Schuchat said on Thursday.

Measles cases were found in 31 states in 2011. Last year's count marked the highest number of cases since 1996...

The Veterans Affairs Department faces a "staggering" backlog of 897,566 disability claims with more than 65% pending for more than 125 days, a problem compounded by an error rate of 16%, representatives of veterans' services organizations told lawmakers on the House Veterans Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

Shinseki vowed to process all claims in fewer than 125 days with a 98% accuracy standard by 2015.

James Wear, assistant director for veterans benefits policy for the group Veterans of Foreign Wars, testified that the high error rate and the poor quality of VA's rating decisions, which determine the financial benefits veterans receive, are a serious problem.

"Quality of decision-making is problematic.... The national average [error rate] has remained nearly stationary at 16% for months," Wear said, adding that the Veterans Benefits Administration's Baltimore regional office has the worst claims error rate in the country -- 29%, which is a slight improvement over its error rate of 33% just a few months ago.
