Remote Newsbiting - Friday, January 20, 2012

Ya know... point of fact... I'm actually getting used to blogging from the library!

Anyway, folks, did you watch the Republican Presidential Debate last night? Bottom line, I'd give Newt the "decision," but it certainly wasn't a knockout.

Romney had some good moments... but he also had some terrible moments - for example trying to finesse the tax return issue.

Romney convinced a Republican crowd that "investment returns" are as worthy of respect as are direct return on labor... meaning paychecks... but does that mean that he'll be able to convince independents, "moderates," and even populist conservatives (never mind "Reagan Democrats") that the rich who live off their "investments" (including trust funds set up in their names which they benefit from simply by being born into wealth) should be paying a lesser percentage tax than a middle class individual or couple who earn two salaries, both in the mid-high five figures... or perhaps the skilled professional who earns in the low-mid six figures, but who physically busts his or her ass doing so?

I don't know, folks... you who are regular readers know my views on tax policy. It seems to me that just as we have graduated "progressive" rates on income tax, so too should capital gains be taxed according to the amount of the gain.

(Any questions... feel free to post 'em as comments or else email me.)

How'd Santorum do? He was hot-cold-hot-cold-hot-cold...

(*SHRUG*)

Frankly since Santorum has no chance of being the nominee it's a waste of my time to go in-depth with a debate performance critique - so I won't.

Ron Paul? Once again, folks... if Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum spent more time latching on to Dr. Paul's ideas and gave him more credit where credit is due...

(*SHRUG*)

Oh! Almost forgot! The big loser last night...? CNN. Leading off with the ex-wife slam... well... something tells me their purpose wasn't to set the stage for Newt Gingrich receiving yet more standing ovations while they themselves were roundly booed.

Anyway... on to the newsbites!

The Supreme Court on Friday ruled in a Texas political dispute, rejecting judge-drawn election maps favoring minority candidates and Democrats in the 2012 congressional and state legislature elections.

* OH… MY… GOD…!!! IT’S A MIRACLE! COMMON SENSE REIGNS…!!!

Gingrich deserved his standing-O for the way he handled CNN's opening question. I think the issue needed to be raised. And I have no problem with raising it first, in order to get it over with and out of the way. BUT, all that needed to be done is to ask Gingrich if there was anything he wanted to say about. If he said "No" he go on to the next topic. If he said "Yes" you let him have his say, and then go on to the next topic. It was totally unnecessary for CNN to provide a detailed summary of all the sleaze in the ex-wife's interview in asking Gingrich is he wanted to talk about it. I rarely agree with Newt about anything. But he got this right.

http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2012/01/19/bankrupt-solyndra-caught-destroying-brand-new-parts/

Solyndra still owes American taxpayers half a billion dollars. But CBS 5 caught them destroying millions of dollars worth of parts.

* EXCUSE ME…?!?!

At Solyndra’s sprawling complex in Fremont, workers in white jumpsuits were unwrapping brand new glass tubes used in solar panels last week. They are the latest, most cutting-edge solar technology, and…

* AND…??? AND…???

…and they are being thrown into dumpsters.

* AND OBAMA’S DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY BUREACRATS ARE…??? WHERE…??? DOING WHAT…???

Forklifts brought one pallet after another piled high with the carefully packaged glass. Slowly but surely it all ended up shattered.

And it’s not a few loads. Hundreds of thousands of tubes on shrink-wrapped pallets will meet a similar demise.

(*BLOOD PRESSURE SHOOTING THROUGH THE ROOF*)

Solyndra paid at least $2 million for the specialized glass. A CBS 5 crew found one piece lying in the parking lot. Solyndra still owes the German company that made the tubes close to another $8 million.

* OH… OH… BUT GET THIS, KIDS…

[C]ourt documents reveal the company received permission from the bankruptcy trustee to abandon the high grade glass, the court agreeing that it was of “inconsequential value” because the cost of storing them exceeds their value.

* INSANITY PILED UPON INSANITY. THE VERY IDEA IS RIDICULOUS!

CBS 5 asked more than once for Solyndra, the auction company and the bankruptcy trustee to talk on camera. But they all refused.

CBS 5 also called the German company that made the glass tubes to see if they would have wanted the tubes back. After all, they are still owed almost $8 million dollars. A spokesman said he had no idea they were being destroyed.

Most healthcare plans will be required to cover birth control without charging co-pays or deductibles starting Aug. 1, the Obama administration announced Friday.

* NAH… NO GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER OF HEALTHCARE HERE. WALK AWAY, PEOPLE… NOTHING TO SEE HERE.

(*SMIRK*)

* FOLKS… (*SIGH*)… FIRST OF ALL GOVERNMENT HAS NO STANDING TO DEMAND INDIVIDUALS OR BUSINESSES SIMPLY “GIVE” AWAY PRODUCTS OR SERVICES.

* SECOND OF ALL…

(*PAUSE*)

* ACTUALLY… FORGET SECOND OF ALL! FOCUS ON FIRST OF ALL! IT’S TIME PEOPLE SERIOUSLY CONSIDER EXACTLY HOW OUTRAGEOUS THIS ACTION IS!

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/jan/19/china-gets-jump-on-us-for-brazils-oil/

The United States wants it, but China is getting it.

* AND WHAT IS THIS “IT?” OIL.

Off the coast of Rio de Janeiro - below a mile of water and two miles of shifting rock, sand and salt - is an ultra deep sea of oil that could turn Brazil into the world’s fourth-largest oil producer, behind Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United States.

The country’s state-controlled oil company, Petrobras, expects to pump 4.9 million barrels a day from the country’s oil fields by 2020, with 40% of that coming from the seabed.

One and a half million barrels will be bound for export markets.

* BOUND FOR… (WAIT FOR IT… WAIT FOR IT…)

Less than a month after President Obama visited Brazil in March to make a pitch for oil, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was off to Beijing to sign oil contracts with two huge state-owned Chinese companies.

The deals are part of a growing oil relationship between the two countries that, thanks to a series of billion-dollar agreements, is giving China greater influence over Brazil’s oil frontier.

* BOY, OH, BOY… THAT HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON SURE IS DOING A BANG-UP JOB AS SECRETARY OF STATE, HUH?!

(*SMIRK*)
During Mrs. Rousseff’s visit to China, Brazil’s Petrobras signed a technology cooperation deal with the China Petroleum & Chemical Corp., or Sinopec. Petrobras also signed a memorandum of understanding with Sinochem, a massive state-owned company with interests in energy, real estate and agrichemicals. The Sinochem deal aims to identify and build “business opportunities in the fields of exploration and production, oil commercialization and mature oil-field recovery,” according to Petrobras.

* HIL-LAR-Y! O-BAM-A! HIL-LAR-Y! O-BAM-A! HIL-LAR-Y! O-BAM-A!

* FOLKS… WE’RE GETTING OUR ASSES HANDED TO US BY CHINA – AND RUSSIA FOR THAT MATTER. WE’RE SUPPOSED TO BE NUMBER ONE, NOT NUMBER THREE!

http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2012/01/19/vietnam-vet-randomly-attacked-by-teens-on-olney-street/

A Vietnam veteran who lost his eye while serving his country was violently beaten during a random attack by a group of teens on a Philadelphia street earlier this week.

* I’M HERE AT THE LIBRARY AND THEY DON’T UPDATE THEIR SOFTWARE SO I CAN’T WATCH THE VIDEO EMBEDDED INTO THE STORY. I’LL BET, HOWEVER, THAT THIS “GROUP OF TEENS” WAS IN ACTUALITY A GROUP OF BLACK TEENS.

* FOLKS… PHILADELPHIA IS OUT OF CONTROL. IT HAS BEEN FOR SOME TIME.

According to investigators, 64-year-old Edward Schaefer was walking to meet his wife at the bus stop when he was approached from behind by six males. McClay said one of the suspects began the violent attack and the others joined in on the random beating.

“These animals are specializing on our elderly people out here and a gentleman who served our country,” Lt. George McClay said.

The attack happened shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 5000 block of N. 5th Street in the city’s Olney section.

* ARRESTING THE ANIMALS WON’T HELP. THEY NEED TO BE PUT DOWN LIKE RABID ANIMALS.

* AH… HERE WE GO:

The suspects are described as six black and Hispanic males, between the ages of 16 to 18. Authorities say all of the suspects have been identified. Once they have been apprehended, they could be charged with attempted murder.

* I ONLY PRAY THAT COPS ARE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOT AND KILL THESE “SUSPECTS” PRIOR TO “THE SYSTEM” SPENDING GOD ONLY KNOWS HOW MUCH ON TRIALS AND IMPRISONMENT.

CNN's intent in leading off with the "open marriage" topic was simply to go for the cheap sensationalism that draws viewers. It is a mistake to read partisan political intent into it. I guarantee you that CNN (and all the other 24/7 cable news outlets) would be totally dismayed if the open marriage thing forced Gingrich out of the race. As we see from S. Carolina, if anything, it helped him. That, and putting uppity nigra, Juan Williams, "in his place." Newt is a good ol' boy--and good copy.

William R. Barker said...

It doesn't take all that much to put Juan Williams "in his place," but if you'll recall... just as a trivia pursuit question... WHICH side was it that stabbed Williams in the back and tried to blacken his character (yeah... pun intended) when he "went off the reservation?"

Answer: The elite Left at NPR.

(*SHRUG*)

Who stood by Williams?

Bill O'Reilly (and, Rob, com'on... you know I'm not O'Reilly fan) and Fox News (which I constantly criticize).

Just sayin'...

In any case, as you also know, my LONG HELD position on the "debates" is that REAL debates should be held... as in "academic style" debates.

I'm no fan of "cheap sensationalism" regardless of who is using it against whom.

(*SHRUG*)

Don't know if you caught Face the Nation yesterday, but Bob Sheiffer (sp?) asked Newt if he'd agree to do an hour long debate - just him against Romney, moderated by Sheiffer - if Romney would agree.

Since Newt's been asking Romney to go mano-a-mano with him for months now with Romney refusing, we'll see if Saturday's blowout convinces Romney to man up and face Gingrich directly.

I don't care WHO your candidate is... a one-on-one debate between Gingrich and Romney would serve the public interest and thus the national interest.
