Barker's Newsbites: Tuesday, January 4, 2011

O.K., let's remember who we used to be...

As to my diet...

Started off the day - 7:45 a.m. - with a banana and a cup of coffee.

Was out all morning and early afternoon; got back home at 3:30 p.m. and made myself an iceberg lettuce, tomato, broccoli, mushrooms, green olives, and pickle slices salad with two tablespoons of mayo, a few shakes of hot sauce, a teaspoon of mustard, and maybe an ounce of cheddar cheese grated on.

7:00 p.m. - Glass of Crystal Light with mega-vitamin.

7:45 p.m. - Glass of "lite" iced tea.

8:00 p.m. - Two slices of pizza.

8:30 p.m. - One grapefruit.

9:00 p.m. - One chocolate covered strawberry.

9:45 p.m. - A glass of Diet Pepsi.

10:00 p.m. - A few goldfish crackers (8 or 9 maybe).

* BY THE HONORABLE RON PAUL, MEMBER OF CONGRESS (R-TX) --

[O]ur foreign policy and current economic crisis go hand in hand.

Some have promised to lead us back to fiscal responsibility while asserting that any reduction in our foreign and military spending is off the table. They would like us to believe that we should not only continue spending as much on the military as the rest of the world combined, but they actually call for an even more aggressive US policy abroad. They believe we should continue to bomb Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan, and elsewhere; that we must impose even more crippling sanctions on countries like Iran while moving steadily on to yet another Middle East war that is not in our interest. They represent the failed policies of the past and they would like to lead us down a dead-end street. We must resist the temptation of their neo-con inspired scare-mongering.

(*CLAP-CLAP-CLAP*)

With the new Republican majority in the House I will have the opportunity as a subcommittee chairman to take a careful look at our domestic monetary policy. I am excited by the prospect of real oversight of the Federal Reserve, but I also hope to focus on the important ways in which our foreign policy and monetary policy are related.

Just last week the Financial Times reported that the limited oversight of the Federal Reserve allowed by the passage of a watered-down version of my Audit the Fed bill revealed that approximately 55% of the loans made available under the largest Federal Reserve bailout program, the Term Auction Facility, went to foreign banks! This is but one example of the real cost to Americans of maintaining its empire overseas, and it cries out for more transparency and oversight.

While President Obama’s economic advisor Austin Goolsbee argued Sunday that a refusal by the Senate to increase the government’s debt ceiling (currently $14.3 trillion) would be “catastrophic” and a sign of “insanity,” that’s not the position the president has held in the past.

* SURPRISE, SURPRISE... (*SNICKER*)

Here are Obama’s thoughts on the debt limit in 2006, when he voted against increasing the ceiling:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

(*SMIRK*)

In 2007 and in 2008, when the Senate voted to increase the limit by $850 billion and $800 billion respectively, Obama did not bother to vote.

* FOLKS... (*SIGH*)... I COULDN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP IF I WERE OF A MIND TO. (*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

* OF COURSE...

[Then-Senator Obama] did vote for TARP, which increased the debt limit by $700 billion.

Oil prices have edged closer to $100 a barrel in recent weeks and Brent crude hit $95 a barrel for the first time in 27 months on Monday...

Over the past year the oil import costs for the 34...countries that make up the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development have soared by $200 billion to $790 billion at the end of 2010, according to an analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The increase, due to high crude prices, is equal to a loss of income of about 0.5% of OECD gross domestic product, according to the IEA.

(*SARCASTIC CLAP-CLAP-CLAP*)

* YEAH... LET'S PREVENT MORE DRILLING... GO, OBAMA, GO!

(*SMIRK*)

“Oil prices are entering a dangerous zone for the global economy,” said Fatih Birol, the IEA’s chief economist.

* NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!

* THIS IS WHAT OBAMA WANTS, THOUGH... THIS IS WHAT THE DEMOCRATS WANT...

The U.S. Treasury website today reported that as of last Friday, the last day of 2010, the National Debt stood at $14,025,215,218,708.52.

* THAT'S $14-PLUS BILLION DOLLARS...

It took just 7 months for the National Debt to increase from $13 trillion on June 1, 2010 to $14 trillion on Dec. 31.

* WHEN DEMOCRATS CONTROLLED BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS AND THE WHITE HOUSE.

* HEY... (*SMIRK*)... "FUNNY" HOW CBS NEWS NEGLECTED TO NOTE WHAT THE DEFICIT WAS ON THE DAY NANCY PELOSI TOOK THE GAVEL COMPARED TO THE DAY SHE SURRENDERED IT.

What kind of Republican supports...dubious green tax credits and consumption mandates to prop up unprofitable environmental darlings? The ethanol-loving midwestern kind...

(*FROWN*)

Currently, imported ethanol is slapped with a 54-cent-per-gallon tariff, while oil companies receive a 45-cent tax credit per gallon of ethanol blended into their gasoline. Both the tariff and the tax credit have just been extended for another year, thanks to a bipartisan push from Cornbelt politicians. In case these provisions aren’t enough to help the industry hobble its way to satisfying profits, lawmakers also decided to mandate that U.S. consumption of renewable fuels (which will certainly be almost entirely corn-based and cellulosic ethanol) reach 36 billion gallons by 2022.

* NONE OF THIS IS ACCEPTABLE. NONE OF THIS IS GOOD FOR AMERICA - ECONOMICALLY OR ENVIRONMENTALLY!

There are four potential midwestern 2012 Republican presidential nominees: Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, Indiana governor Mitch Daniels, South Dakota senator John Thune, and Indiana congressman Mike Pence. When it comes to doling out favors to the ethanol industry, none of them can credibly claim his attitude was “just say no.”

* REMEMBER THOSE NAME, FOLKS: PAWLENTY, DANIELS, THUNE AND PENCE.

When Mitch Daniels was sworn in as governor in January of 2005, there was one ethanol plant in Indiana. Now there are twelve operating plants and a thirteenth set to start running early next year.

* NEXT...

Throughout his time as governor, Pawlenty has been a friend to ethanol. In 2004, Pawlenty created the JOBZ program, an innovative way to subsidize ethanol. ... A year later, Pawlenty signed legislation mandating that all gas sold in Minnesota contain 20% ethanol by 2013, up from 10%.

* NEXT...

* MIKE PENCE. PENCE HAS A MIXED RECORD. HE MAY BE SALVAGEABLE AS A FUTURE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.

* NEXT...

Sen. John Thune of South Dakota received the President’s Award from the National Corn Growers Association this summer. ... To ethanol advocates, Thune is a dependable friend.

* THUNE IS HALF A RINO. HE'S A SELF-SERVING POL OF THE FIRST ORDER.

The Detroit Public Schools Office of the Inspector General investigation said Karen Drysdale-Oriucci, a DPS teacher since 1994, went to American Jewelry and Loan on Greenfield Road on Wednesday to pawn the notebook computer she received from the district on Dec. 17.
