Air Force and Navy aircraft are still flying hundreds of strike missions over Libya despite the Obama administration’s claim that American forces are playing only a limited support role in the NATO operation.

An Africa Command (AFRICOM) spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday that since NATO’s Operation Unified Protector (OUP) took over from the American-led Operation Odyssey Dawn on March 31, the U.S. military has flown hundreds of strike sorties. Previously, Washington had claimed that it was mostly providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and tanker support to NATO forces operating over Libya.

* FOLKS! THIS IS THE AIR FORCE TIMES REPORTING THIS...!!! THIS ARTICLE IS A CRY FOR HELP FROM THE PEOPLE ON THE FRONT LINES WHO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON!

AFRICOM spokeswoman Nicole Dalrymple said in an emailed statement. “As of today, and since 31 March, the U.S. has flown a total of 3,475 sorties in support of OUP. Of those, 801 were strike sorties, 132 of which actually dropped ordnance.”

* DOESN'T IT BOTHER ANYONE BUT ME THAT THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES IS CONSTANTLY SHOWN TO BE A LIAR?

Dalrymple named the Air Force’s F-16CJ and Navy’s EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft as the primary platforms that have been suppressing enemy air defenses. [T]hose F-16s are not solely drawn from units based in Spangdahlem, Germany, or Aviano, Italy. The service has reportedly deployed U.S.-based units to Europe to conduct these operations.

Oil prices have surged in the last few days and are now less than a dollar from where they were when President Obama made the [irresponsible] decision to tap the nation's strategic reserve last Thursday.

* HEY... FOLKS... I ADMIT... I WAS STUPIDLY WILLING TO GIVE BOZO THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT... BUT IT SEEMS THE EVIDENCE IS IN.

Paul Horsnell, head of commodities research at Barclays Capital, noted that prices for oil contracts several months out in advance have risen even more than the near month contracts.

Perhaps you've already noticed around the neighborhood, but this is a rotten summer for young Americans to find a job. The Department of Labor reported last week that a smaller share of 16-19 year-olds are working than at anytime since records began to be kept in 1948.

Only 24% of teens, one in four, have jobs, compared to 42% as recently as the summer of 2001.

[I]nstead of learning valuable job skills - getting out of bed before noon, showing up on time, being courteous to customers, operating a cash register or fork lift - millions of kids will spend the summer playing computer games or hanging out.

* WELCOME TO THE AGE OF OBAMA!

The lousy economic recovery explains much of this decline in teens working, and some is due to increases in teen summer school enrollment. Some is also cultural: Many parents don't put the same demands on teens as they once did to get out and work. But Congress has also contributed by passing one of the most ill-timed minimum wage increases in history.

* AND BY "CONGRESS," WE'RE NOT TALKING THE BOEHNER REPUBLICAN HOUSE... (READ ON...)

One of the first acts of the gone-but-not-forgotten Nancy Pelosi ascendancy was to raise the minimum wage in stages to $7.25 an hour in 2009 from $5.15 in 2007.

(The Center for American Progress, often called the think tank for the Obama White House, recently recommended another increase to $8.25 an hour.)

Though the U.S. unemployment rate is 9.1%, the "thinkers" assert that a rising wage would "stimulate economic growth to the tune of 50,000 new jobs."

So if the government orders employers to pay more to hire workers when they're already not hiring, they'll somehow hire more workers.

By this logic, if we raised the minimum wage to $25 an hour we'd have full employment.

Back on planet Earth, the minimum wage increase has coincided with the plunge in the percentage of working teens. Before the most recent wage hikes, roughly seven million teens were working. Now there are closer to five million with a job and paycheck.

Black teens have had the worst of it, with their unemployment rate rising to 41.6% in April from 29% in 2007, faster than almost any other group.

* CHANT IT WITH ME, FOLKS... O-BAM-A! O-BAM-A! O-BAM-A! O-BAM-A! O-BAM-A! O-BAM-A!

A 2010 study by economists William Even of Miami University of Ohio and David Macpherson of Trinity University found that as a result of the $2.10 increase in minimum wage, "teen employment dropped by 6.9%. . . . For the teen population with less than 12 years of education completed, teen employment dropped by 12.4%." For teens priced out of the labor market, their wage fell to zero.

* HEY! I'VE GOT AN IDEA! LET'S IMPORT MORE MEXICANS! YEAH... THAT'S THE TICKET! ILLEGAL ALIENS WILL SAVE THE NATION!

The great tragedy is that even discussing the role of the minimum wage in teen unemployment seems to be a political taboo. The other day we saw ABC's George Stephanopoulos baiting Michele Bachmann on the minimum wage, as if refusing to raise it would be some epic political gaffe. Ms. Bachmann didn't back down from saying that the minimum wage has contributed to unemployment, though she didn't explain why. What she or another candidate should do is stop playing defense and ask why Mr. Stephanopoulos doesn't seem to mind a black teen jobless rate of 41.6%.

* HEAR! HEAR!

The U.S. has long had a labor market flexible enough that when the economy grows, the jobless rate falls smartly. This time has been different, and the great danger is that Obamanomics has moved the U.S. to a permanently higher jobless rate as in so much of Europe. For America's teenagers this summer, that reality is already here.

Each day for the last three months, NATO has issued a classified order dividing the ongoing air war in Libya into offensive and defensive operations.

(*SNORT*)

The latter category is America’s job...

...and it is huge. It includes Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses, which consists mainly of U.S. jets “loitering” in Libyan air space to watch for surface-to-air missiles that might threaten the “offensive” part of the mission: the French, British, Canadian, Norwegian, and Danish planes attacking Muammar el-Qaddafi’s forces.

* OH... AND THEN WE - AMERICAN TAXPAYERS - REPLACE THE ORDINANCE EXPENDED BY... er... NATO. WHAT A DEAL, HUH?!

The United States is also supplying most of NATO’s intelligence-gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance capability in Libya, along with air-to-air refueling for NATO strike forces.

President Obama was somewhat disingenuous...

...in claiming at his Wednesday news conference that U.S. forces were not “carrying the lion’s share of this operation.”

U.S. planes, in fact, “represent the majority of aircraft within the theater, and they have done so from the beginning,” NATO spokesman Tony White told National Journal on Thursday. “The U.S. role continues to be fundamental to the mission” and is “supremely important in every strike sortie.”

* SO IN OTHER WORDS... (*PAUSE*)... OBAMA IS A F--KING PIECE OF S--T LIAR. DOES THAT ABOUT COVER IT?

* MOVING BEYOND LIBYA... (READ ON...)

The Predator drone has become Obama’s weapon of choice in theaters from Pakistan to Yemen and was recently introduced into the Libyan conflict, permitting a policy that comes very close to conducting war without public accountability (though U.S. ambassadors in these countries are supposed to vet targets and Congress is supposed to know, strike requests are almost never denied).

In Afghanistan, the concept of counterinsurgency, itself a cleaned-up, somewhat euphemized form of war, is fading fast, and there aren’t any doctrines to take its place. More and more, instead, the administration has come to rely on the CIA and on private contractors not subject to normal oversight.

* SAME DEAL IN IRAQ. WE'RE NOT SO MUCH LEAVING AS THE STATE DEPARTMENT IS TAKING OVER USING HIGHLY PAID CONTRACTORS AS GRUNTS.

Under new Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, a budget whiz intent on paring traditional war platforms, and the nation’s covert-action-savvy incoming CIA director, the soon-to-be-civilian Gen. David Petraeus, the process of turning war into something other than war is likely to grow even more intricate and subtle. Both men have already proved adept at fighting long-term actions in ways the public isn’t told about, in places such as Yemen.

And there will be new covert types of war, typified by the recent creation of a U.S. Cyber Command. “We talk about nuclear, we talk about conventional warfare. We don't spend enough time talking about the threat of cyberwar,” Panetta said at his Senate confirmation hearing. “There's a strong likelihood that the next Pearl Harbor that we confront could very well be a cyberattack that cripples our power systems, our grid, our security systems, our financial systems, our governmental systems.”

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said today he will appeal a court ruling that overturned the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative, which bans the use of race and gender preferences in college admissions and government hiring and contracting.

* YEP. (*SIGH*) YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY. THE FEDS ARE INSISTING THAT MICHIGAN... er... ENGAGE IN REVERSE DISCRIMINATION.

* FOLKS... YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS SHIT UP!

"The Michigan Civil Rights Initiative embodies the fundamental premise of what America is all about: equal opportunity under the law," Schuette said in a statement. "Entrance to our great universities must be based upon merit, and I will continue the fight for equality, fairness and rule of law."

A federal appeals court today overturned Proposal 2, saying the voter-approved measure harms minorities and is unconstitutional.

In a 2-1 decision, the [federal] judges ruled that the law violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.

* YES... THEY RULED THAT REQUIRING COLOR BLIND ADMISSION JUDGEMENTS WAS... er... UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

Jennifer Gratz, who headed the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative ballot proposal, said she doesn't think the ruling is going to stand long term because the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled initiatives than ban ran preferences are constitutional.

"To me, this is the epitome of an activist court. These justices held onto this ruling for years and released it the day before the holiday weekend. They were hoping they would catch people off guard and not make the news," said, Gratz, director of the American Civil Rights Institute, a California-based group that advocates against affirmative action.

Ward Connerly, a former University of California regent who was a major backer of Proposal 2 and California's similar Proposition 209, said the ruling means the people have no right to govern their own institutions.

"It's saying the people have no right to insist that everyone be treated equality.

Gregory Creswell of Detroit gathered signatures for Proposal 2, the ballot initiative banning race and gender in college admissions. He said today he was dismayed by the decision.

"In a free society, politicians should not determine who wins and loses in life. It should be that person based on their merits. I don't want the government being for me because of my skin color or against me," Creswell said.
