Barker's Newsbites: Monday, July 15, 2013

Zimmerman...

I'm thrilled... but I freely admit... I hadn't bet money that he'd be fully acquitted - not of all charges!

Of course I knew what the verdict should be - not guilty - but was I confident the jury would stick to the law and not feel pressured to convict Zimmerman on "something?" Nope.

Am I thrilled the verdict came when it did - mid-weekend when most of us were still asleep? Damn straight! A Friday verdict or even a Monday verdict would have probably led to attention-seeking rioting.

Has there been some rioting? Sure... but nothing "serious" - at least not yet; and hopefully never.

Anyway... Mary and I had a super 20th anniversary weekends thanks to DT and ODM! (Thanks guys!) Not only did they host us, but they went above and beyond (well... actually they always do...) when it came to "off-site" entertainment!

(*WINK*)

Good...

Bad...

Good...

Good...

Folks... we do know how to live!

Oakland police officers that had been near the corner retreated, leaving the helpless drivers without police protection. It's unclear who gave that command.

* HUH!? WHAT!? WHEN!? WHERE!?

* LET'S START AT THE BEGINNING, SHALL WE...

Crowds turned violent in Oakland, CA., late Sunday night.

We're received reports that rocks and bottles were thrown at police and that reporters were attacked by protesters.

A reporter with our media partner the Bay Area News Group tweeted that she and her photographer were attacked by the crowd. She also tweeted that demonstrators attacked a TV cameraman.

Oakland police officers that had been near the corner retreated, leaving the helpless drivers without police protection.

* IRONIC, HUH?

It's unclear who gave that command.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

The hundreds had gathered to protest the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin.

* POLICE REFUSED TO CONTROL HUNDREDS... (*PAUSE*)... WHAT WOULD THEY DO IF IT WERE THOUSANDS... TENS OF THOUSANDS...? (AGAIN... THE IRONY...)

The afternoon began with a rally at Frank Ogawa Plaza.

Later, protesters tried to crash a BART station.

Then, in the middle of Broadway, they set fire to an American flag.

Late Sunday night a photographer reported he was attacked by the crowd when he wandered into the middle of the group on Broadway.

Businesses across downtown Oakland were busy cleaning up after a demonstration late Saturday night turned to destruction. All remnants of a violent protest Saturday night, when 100 people gathered after the verdict was read, marched through downtown Oakland and left destruction in their wake. At Flora, on the corner of 19th and Telegraph, employees and patrons had to duck for cover under tables as the restaurant's windows shattered around them.

Down the block, Sears has been a target during past demonstrations. On Saturday night, the business sustained the worst damage yet. Witnesses say the protesters used weights to smash nearly 30 windows and doors.

Despite all the damage, there were no arrests and no injuries.

Mayor Jean Quan released a statement Sunday, condemning the protesters who took part in the vandalism. It reads, in part, "Sadly, some of them dishonored the memory of Trayvon by engaging in violent activities... This is unacceptable as well. We will not tolerate violence in our city."

* BUT THEY HAVE TOLERATED VIOLENCE...! (THIS IS ORWELLIAN!)

The Treasury Department has admitted for the first time that confidential tax records of several political candidates and campaign donors were improperly scrutinized by government officials, but the Justice Department has declined to prosecute any of the cases.

* ...BUT THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT HAS DECLINE TO PROSECUTE ANY OF THE CASES...?!?!

The investigation did not name the government officials who obtained the IRS records improperly, nor did it reveal the identities or political parties of the people whose tax records were compromised.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

Amid that furor over the abuse of the agency’s powers, the IRS has denied that the tax records of political candidates or donors were improperly accessed.

* UNTIL NOW! (YEAH... FUNNY... NOT FUCKING REALLY!!!)

A spokesman for the Justice Department did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

The IRS did not respond to a request for comment on Mr. George’s findings.
