Barker's Newsbites: Thursday, March 13, 2014

Skynet...

Revenge of the machines...

HAL 9000...

All I know is that during the night both my clock-radio and bedroom VCR...

(Yeah, yeah... it's the friggin' BEDROOM for God's sake!)

...reset themselves!

I awoke at 7:23 a.m. (according to my bedside clock-radio) only to note (after sitting on the john with the door open so I could see the cable box in Kim's bedroom) a moment later that "time had reversed itself" and according to Optimum the time was 6:24 a.m.!

At that point... being the husband I am... I shouted out "Honey...?! WHAT TIME IS IT...?!?!"

"Honey" replied, "6::25 a.m. according to my clock... 5:25 a.m. according to the VCR!"

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

Oh, well... the good news... I'll get BOTH cups of morning coffee into me before leaving for a ride!

New Zealand raised its key interest rate, the first developed nation to exit record-low borrowing costs this year, and said it plans to remove stimulus faster than previously forecast to contain inflation.

(*STANDING OVATION*)

The Kiwi gained after Reserve Bank of New Zealand Governor Graeme Wheeler said further increases are likely in coming months...

(*STILL APPLAUDING*)

New Zealand is removing monetary stimulus at the same time as the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan pledge to hold interest rates at record lows to spur lending and stoke their own economies.

New research published by Stanford Univeristy Wednesday reveal phone and Internet metadata collected by the NSA can expose far more information about an individual than the agency admits, including, “medical conditions, financial and legal connections, and even whether they own a gun.”

http://www.nationaljournal.com/health-care/white-house-sequester-no-longer-applies-to-part-of-obamacare-20140313

The Obama administration has decided that the sequester's mandatory spending cuts no longer apply to part of ObamaCare.

* HAS... DECIDED...

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

The health care law provides subsidies to help low-income people cover some of their out-of-pocket costs. Last year, the administration said those subsidies were taking a 7% cut because of the sequester, which imposed across-the-board reductions in federal spending. But now, the President has changed his mind. President Obama has removed the cost-sharing subsidies from its list of programs that are subject to the sequester, eliminating the 7% cut for 2015.

* UNDER WHAT AUTHORITY... NO ONE KNOWS. (AS FAR AS I CAN TELL... NONE.)

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, which noticed the change, said the reversal would likely restore about $560 million to the subsidies — and require $560 million in cuts to other programs to make up for it.

* UNLESS OBAMA NEXT SIMPLY DECLARES THE $560 MILLION DOESN'T HAVE TO BE MADE UP. (HEY... WHO KNOWS...?!?! I'M SERIOUS! APPARENTLY THIS PRESIDENT'S POWERS ARE WHAT HE SAYS THEY ARE - PERIOD!)

The cost-sharing subsidies are expected to total $8 billion this year and $156 billion over the next decade.

* REMEMBER WHEN WE WERE TOLD... PROMISED... THAT OBAMACARE WOULD SAVE MONEY...??? LOWER THE DEFICIT...???

Who benefits from the change? The low-income families who qualify for these subsidies...

...as well as the White House and insurance companies.

Some consumers have complained about high out-of-pocket costs in the plans they've purchased through the health care law's exchanges. This change will help reduce those costs, at least for low-income families. And because the subsidy is paid directly to insurance companies, the change means more money for insurers as well.

* TWO-PARTER... (Part 1 of 2)

http://www.nationaljournal.com/tech/patriot-act-author-cia-spying-is-almost-nixonian-20140313

The author of the post-9/11 law that granted the government much of its modern surveillance authority is again demanding the government explain how and to what extent it spies on members of Congress and their staffers.

"Tapping into computers used by members of Congress and attempts to use the Justice Department to intimidate congressional staff is a gross violation of the constitutional principles of separation of powers," Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner wrote in a Thursday letter to Deputy Attorney General James Cole. "It paints an almost-Nixonian picture of an administration that believes it can act with impunity behind a veil of secrecy."

* NIXON HAD SHAME! NIXON RESIGNED! THIS ADMINISTRATION MAKES THE NIXON ADMINISTRATION LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF CHOIR BOYS!

* NIXON LOVED AMERICA MORE THAN HE DID POWER OR HIS OWN POLITICAL SELF-INTEREST. (AND I'M NOT TALKING JUST HIS RESIGNATION... I'M TALKING HIS REFUSAL TO DRAG THE NATION THROUGH A POST-ELECTION CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS IN 1960 WHEN THE MAFIA (AND MAFIA CONTROLLED UNIONS... AND PLAIN OLD DEMOCRAT CONTROLLED UNIONS... AND PLAIN OLD DEMOCRATS) STOLE THE ELECTION FOR KENNEDY... WON ILLINOIS VIA VOTER FRAUD AND PERHAPS TEXAS AS WELL. (FOLKS... IF YOU WERE NEVER TAUGHT THIS IN SCHOOL THEN YOU RECEIVED A LOUSY EDUCATION!)

The Wisconsin Republican's new letter arrives on the heels of dramatic accusations leveled this week by Sen. Dianne Feinstein that the CIA hacked her intelligence panel's computers during its investigation into the spy agency's Bush-era interrogation programs. The letter asks Cole to respond to an earlier request sent last month by Sensenbrenner, in tandem with Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Darrell Issa, asking for a clarification of recent congressional testimony where he said the government "probably" spies on members of Congress.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

"We probably do," Cole said in response to a string of questions from Issa during a House Judiciary hearing in February. "But we're not allowed to look at any of those [phone lines], however, unless we have reasonable, articulable suspicion that those numbers are related to a known terrorist threat."

* NOTICE, FOLKS... NOT "WARRANT." NOPE! INSTEAD... THIS BEING THE AGE OF OBAMA... "REASONABLE, ARTICULABLE SUSPICION." (SO MUCH FOR THE CONSTITUTION AND THE BILL OF RIGHTS...)

* TO BE CONTINUED...

William R. Barker said...

* CONCLUDING... (Part 2 of 2)

The admission should not have been surprising, but it still incensed a number of lawmakers. The administration has repeatedly argued that while virtually all phone records are subject to its data sweeps — a technique it says is necessary to assemble the whole haystack in order to find the needle — it examines only records determined to be relevant to a terrorism investigation.

* REMEMBER J. EDGAR HOOVER...? REMEMBER HIS "SECRET FILES" WHICH KEPT HIM SAFE FROM POLITICAL THREAT - PARTICULARLY THREATS FROM BOBBY KENNEDY? IS IT REALLY SO HARD TO IMAGE THAT OBAMA LOYALISTS (POLITICAL LOYALISTS I'M TALKING ABOUT) WITHIN THE NSA... WITHIN THE CIA... WITHIN THE MILITARY... CERTAINLY WITHIN ERIC HOLDER'S TOTALLY POLITICIZED "JUSTICE" DEPARTMENT... MIGHT ABUSE THEIR POWER AND DIG UP DIRT WITH WHICH TO BLACKMAIL REPUBLICANS AND EVEN FELLOW DEMOCRATS?

(*SHRUG*)

Sensenbrenner's new letter asks for a response no later than March 28, saying the issue "is even more pressing given recent statements" from Feinstein about the CIA's interference in her investigation of the government's now-defunct interrogation practices.

(He also expressed frustration that more than a month has passed without any official response from the Justice Department.)

* ERIC HOLDER'S "JUSTICE" DEPARTMENT...

But the letter also serves to put two of the most important lawmakers involved in the surveillance debate in the same corner for the first time since Edward Snowden's leaks last June sparked renewed international scrutiny of the National Security Agency's activities. Sensenbrenner, the onetime mastermind of the Patriot Act, is the chief sponsor of the Freedom Act, a bill that would strongly limit the NSA's collection of U.S. phone records. He has repeatedly criticized both Obama and President George W. Bush for misusing his Patriot Act as a blank check for the bulk collection of Americans' phone records.

Feinstein, meanwhile, has championed a bill that critics, including Sensenbrenner, say would largely leave that program intact.
