Barker's Newsbites: Monday, August 15, 2011

Well, folks... welcome to Monday!

I had a busy morning! I guest-hosted my buddy Frank's radio show on WTBQ and aside from me giving out the wrong phone number in the first segment it went pretty well.

I don't really like my own speaking voice. (Funny... 'cause as friends know, I'm in love with my own singing voice!)

(*HUGE FRIGG'N GRIN*)

I'm no Rush Limbaugh - let's just put it that way.

Doing a radio show on one's own - especially if no one calls in - ain't easy, folks. (There's a reason Rush Limbaugh makes tens of millions of dollars a year, folks!) You're constantly worried about allowing "dead air" and if your goal is to get out as much information to folks as possible in the shortest amount of time... well... you're gonna end up simply spouting facts and figures for minutes at a time without pause.

In any case, I got through it and now I'm back here blogging; soon I'll start searching for and posting today's newsbites.

I gave out the web address of this blog quite a few times on the radio this morning; hopefully at least a few folks who have never heard of "Usually Right" or "Bill Barker" will pop in and peruse the site.

For anyone visiting for the first time... the "newsbites" themselves are to be found within the comments sections of each daily Newsbite posting.

Anyway, folks... on to today's newsbites!

Kansas City Mayor Sly James...

* SLY JAMES...?!?! (*HUGE FRIGG'N GRIN*) (*TITTERING*) (*FULL BORE LAUGH*)

...vowed Sunday that he’d take steps to end large, nighttime gatherings of unsupervised teenagers and preteens on the Country Club Plaza by holding parents to account.

* BLACK TEENS AND PRE-TEENS FOLKS - IT'S IN THE PHOTO!

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD AT THE LENGTHS THE MEDIA WILL GO TO BE POLITICALLY CORRECT*)

It may or may not include an early curfew, as some are calling for.

“We can’t expect that imposing a curfew is going to stop some 15-, 16-, 17-year-old from bringing a gun to anywhere,” he said at an afternoon City Hall news conference. “On the other hand, we should be able to expect parents not to have their 13-year-old children on the Plaza getting shot.”

* HEY, FOLKS... REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE 15... 16... 17...? I DO! SOMEHOW I DON'T REMEMBER BEING ARMED!

His announcement came a day after the Saturday night shooting that saw three youths wounded and the mayor forced to the ground by his security team.

* FOLKS... WE EITHER MUST STOP THE MADNESS - STOP IT IN ITS TRACKS!

[T]wo boys and a girl - 13, 15 and 16 years old - were wounded. A bullet grazed the girl’s face, and the two boys were shot in their legs, police said.

* A BIT OF RECENT HISTORY:

[O]n April 10, 2010, as many as 900 youths, some as young as 11, converged on the shopping and entertainment district that Saturday night. Police responded to reports of vandalism and assaults. One group of teens robbed and beat a couple from Grandview. A girl in a prom dress was shoved into a fountain. Fights broke out. Police used pepper spray to disperse groups who refused to move along when instructed to do so.

* FOLKS... THE SHOPPING AND ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT OF AN AMERICAN CITY! THIS AIN'T "OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND," THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU OR I COULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT UP IN - WITH OUR FAMILIES - HAD WE BEEN IN KANSAS CITY ON BUSINESS OR PLEASURE THAT SATURDAY NIGHT...!!!

* BY THE WAY, FOLKS... FIRST IT'S INDIVIDUAL SHOPLIFTING... THEN IT'S FLASH-MOB LOOTING... WHAT DO YOU SUPPOSE THE NEXT STEP IS?

(*SIGH*)

Thousands of sacks of food aid meant for Somalia's famine victims have been stolen and are being sold at markets in the same neighborhoods where skeletal children in filthy refugee camps can't find enough to eat, an Associated Press investigation has found.

* I AM SHOCKED! SHOCKED I TELL YOU! NEXT THING THE AP IS GOING TO REPORT THAT GAMBLING IS GOING ON IN LAS VEGAS!

(*SMIRK*) (*SNORT*)

In Mogadishu markets, vast piles of food sacks are for sale with stamps on them from the World Food Program, the U.S. government aid arm USAID and the Japanese government.

[A]id is not even safe once it has been distributed to families huddled in the makeshift camps popping up around the capital. Families at the large, government-run Badbado camp, where several aid groups have been distributing food, said they were often forced to hand back aid after journalists had taken photos of them with it.

International officials have long expected some of the food aid pouring into Somalia to go missing. But the sheer scale of the theft taking place calls into question aid groups' ability to reach the starving. It also raises concerns about the willingness of aid agencies and the Somali government to fight corruption, and whether diverted aid is fueling Somalia's 20-year-civil war.

An official in Mogadishu with extensive knowledge of the food trade said he believes a massive amount of aid is being stolen - perhaps up to half of aid deliveries - by unscrupulous "businessmen." The percentage had been lower, he said, but in recent weeks the flood of aid into the capital with little or no controls has created a bonanza for "businessmen."

* YEAH... "BUSINESSMEN." (*SMIRK*) RIGHT.

The AP investigation also found evidence that the U.N.'s World Food Program is relying on a contractor blamed for diverting large amounts of food aid in a 2010 U.N. report

(*SARCASTIC CLAP-CLAP-CLAP*)

* FOLKS... (*SHAKING MY HEAD*)... YA CAN'T MAKE THIS SHIT UP!

* OH... AND BTW... ALL OF THIS FALL'S UNDER MADAM SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON'S JURISDICTION.

(*SNICKER*)

A federal judge has struck down an Obama administration policy concerning drilling on public lands...

* THE OBAMA POLICY BEING TO HOLD UP DRILLING FOR AS LONG POSSIBLE!

The ruling, issued Friday by the U.S. District Court in Wyoming, rejected a policy that had required more extensive "environmental review" of some drilling permits.

The Interior Department "had no authority" to adopt the policy last year "without public notice and an opportunity for comment," Judge Nancy D. Freudenthal wrote. She ruled in favor of an industry group and vacated the policy nationwide.

* SERIOUSLY, FOLKS... THE OBAMA ADMINSTRATION HAS ONLY CONTEMPT FOR THE RULE OF LAW.

The ruling "holds the promise of new jobs and economic growth," said Kathleen Sgamma, director of government and public affairs for the Western Energy Alliance, which filed the suit and represents Devon Energy Corp. and Anadarko Petroleum Corp., among others.

(*SINCERE APPLAUSE*)

U.S. permits quickened under the Bush administration and hit a peak during the 2007 fiscal year, when the Interior Department approved 7,124 permits to drill for oil and gas on federal lands.

The Obama administration approved 4,487 such permits in 2009 and 4,090 in 2010, according to data from the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management.

* PRETTY BIG GAP!

Some of that drop can be attributed to lower demand as a result of the economic downturn, but the industry says permits are also taking longer to obtain.

* DOWNTURN OR NOT... (*PAUSE*)... STILL SEEMS LIKE A PRETTY BIG GAP TO ME!

Aided by at least $43 million in "assistance" from the government of Massachusetts...

* THE AUTHOR MEANS "...FROM MASSACHUSETTS TAXPAYERS..."

...and an "innovative" solar energy technology, Evergreen Solar emerged in the last three years as the third-largest maker of solar panels in the United States.

But now the company is closing its main American factory, laying off the 800 workers by the end of March and shifting production to a joint venture with a Chinese company in central China.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

Other solar panel manufacturers are also struggling in the United States. Solyndra, a Silicon Valley business, received a visit from President Obama in May and a $535 million federal loan guarantee, only to say in November that it was shutting one of its two American plants and would delay expansion of the other.

* NICE! (AND ARE THE LOANS WE'VE GUARANTEED STILL BEING PAID OR IS SOLYNDRA GOING TO DEFAULT LEAVING THE U.S. TAXPAYER TO HOLD THE BAG - COURTESY OF PRESIDENT OBAMA?)

First Solar, an American company, is one of the world’s largest solar power vendors. But most of its products are made overseas.

(*SARCASTIC THUMBS UP WITH A SMIRK*)

Chinese solar panel manufacturers accounted for slightly over half the world’s production last year. Their share of the American market has grown nearly sixfold in the last two years, to 23 percent in 2010 and is still rising fast, according to GTM Research, a renewable energy market analysis firm in Cambridge, Mass.

In addition to solar energy, China just passed the United States as the world’s largest builder and installer of wind turbines.

* OH, YEAH, FOLKS! OBAMANOMICS IS WORKING OUT JUST SWELL!

* FOLKS... WE'RE IN DEEP, DEEP, DEEP DOO-DOO. (BTW... WHERE ARE THE UNIONS?! NOT A FRIGG'N WORD!)
