* BY JOHN TAMNY

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner has said that if Congress doesn't agree to a debt-ceiling increase that the federal government won't have the means to pay its bills...

* WHICH AS WE ALL KNOW IS AN UNADULTERATED LIE.

Geithner has been joined in this bit of scaremongering by Ben Bernanke, our walking, talking contrarian economic indicator who also serves as Fed Chairman.

* DEAR GOD... WE BEG OF THEE... TAKE THE BLESSED BERNANKE INTO YOUR HOLY EMBRACE... AS SOON AS POSSIBLE...!!!

For fun, let's assume for a moment that much as stopped clocks get the time right twice a day, that Geithner and Bernanke are for once correct.

(*AMUSED SNORT*) O.K., LET'S RUN WITH THAT.. (*WINK*)

If so, their breathy warnings explain why it's essential that a Republican Congress that pays lip service to smaller government must not give in to Geithner's apocalyptic warnings.

(*TWO THUMBS UP*)

Indeed, if "catastrophe" is the certain result of a U.S. debt default, it's fair to say that Treasury will not default.

* DUH...!!!

Rather than default, Treasury will be sure to pay interest due on U.S. debt...

(*DRUM ROLL*) WAIT FOR IT... WAIT FOR IT...

...after which a spendthrift Congress will be forced to make do with funds left over.

(*WILD CHEERING*)

At that point a Congress that has never been required to make "tough choices" will have to do just that. Programs will shrink, or be abolished altogether, and we'll all be better off as a result.

* GOD BLESS AMERICA...!!!

Voters are overwhelmingly against an increase in the debt ceiling... [A] Republican [House and Senate minority Republicans] who talk a great game about the importance of small government [have] been handed the political opportunity of a lifetime.

(*NOD*)

[V]oters don't want a debt-limit increase, and the failure to increase the [debt limit] would force the spending cuts that Republicans claim they want.

(*NOD*)

[V]otes by any Republicans in favor of a debt-ceiling boost are votes for the kind of big government they regularly rail against.

(*NOD*)

Now is our chance to see if they actually believe their own rhetoric.

* BY THE HON. RON PAUL, UNITED STATES CONGRESSMAN (R-TX)

On April 20th, after a year-long undercover sting operation, armed federal agents acting on behalf of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raided the business of Pennsylvanian Amish farmer Dan Allgyer to prevent him from selling his unpasteurized milk to willing, fully-informed customers in Maryland.

Federal agents wasted a whole year and who knows how many of our tax dollars posing as customers in order to catch Allgyer committing the "crime" of selling his milk.

He was not tricking people into buying it, he was not forcing people to purchase it, and there had been no complaints about his product. These were completely voluntary transactions, but ones that our nanny-state federal government did not approve of, and so they shut down his business.

The FDA claims its regulatory powers over food safety give it the authority to ban the interstate sales of raw milk, but this is an unconstitutional misapplication of the commerce clause for legislative ends. As we have seen, if the executive branch feels hamstrung by the fact that our framers placed lawmaking authority in the Legislative Branch, they simply make their own laws and call them "regulations."

(*NOD*)

We all know how the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) uses such bogus regulation authority to harass, hinder, and shut down countless other legitimate businesses. Sadly, Congress has been far too lax for far too long as the executive branch continues to encroach on its areas of responsibility and thereby undermines our system of government.

(*NOD*)

Most Americans understand that if you don't want to drink unpasteurized milk you simply do not buy it. But the federal government solution is pre-dawn raids which destroy the livelihoods of honest, hardworking families in this time of continued economic hardship.

I am outraged by this raid and the many others like it, and that is why last week I introduced HR 1830, a bill to allow the shipment and distribution of unpasteurized milk and milk products for human consumption across state lines. This legislation removes the unconstitutional restraint on farmers who wish to sell or otherwise distribute, and people who wish to consume, unpasteurized milk and milk products.

(*CLAP-CLAP-CLAP*)

Many Americans have done their own research and come to the conclusion that unpasteurized milk is healthier than pasteurized milk. These Americans have the right to consume these products without having the federal government second-guess their judgment or thwart their wishes.

If we are not even free anymore to decide something as basic as what we wish to eat or drink, how much freedom do we really have left?

[President Obama's] Department of Homeland Security will extend and expand Temporary Protected Status for Haitians living in the United States.

* SURE. 'CAUSE GOD FORBID HAITIANS... er... REBUILD HAITI.

(*SMIRK*)

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano on Tuesday announced an 18-month extension of the protected status, which had been set to expire in July, allowing 48,000 Haitian nationals to remain in the U.S. until Jan. 22, 2013.

* AH... UNTIL AFTER THE 2012 ELECTIONS...

(*SMIRK*)

Thousands of other Haitians who fled to the United States in the 12 months following the devastating January 2010 earthquake will now be eligible for TPS, which had previously been granted only to Haitians who were already living in the U.S. at the time of the quake.

* SEE A PATTERN HERE, FOLKS!

The news was met with relief from Haitian community leaders in South Florida, immigrant rights activists and clergy.

* CALL ME CRAZY, BUT... (*SCRATCHING MY HEAD*)... SHOULDN'T "HAITIAN COMMUNITY LEADERS" BE LIVING IN... er... HAITI...???

“It’s really good news for the community. We were all holding our breath and waiting,” said Marleine Bastien, founding member and executive director of Fanm Ayisyen Nan Miyami, or Haitian Women of Miami. ... During a phone conference with Homeland Security officials on Tuesday, Bastien praised the Obama administration for the extension, then asked whether officials have considered a family reunification parole program for Haitians, “like there is for Cubans.” Such a program would speed up the immigration process for thousands of Haitians on the island whose visa petitions have already been approved.

(*SNORT*)

* FOLKS... AGAIN... THERE'S A PRETTY CLEAR PATTERN HERE...

(*SHRUG*)

The brutal job market brought on by the recession has been hard on everyone, but especially devastating on the youngest members of the labor force. About 60% of recent graduates have not been able to find a full-time job in their chosen profession, according to job placement firm Adecco.

Last year, the unemployment rate for college graduates age 24 and younger rose to 9.4%, the highest since the Labor Department began keeping records in 1985.

Adecco also found that 18% of recent grads have been forced to turn to full-time jobs outside their field of study, often jobs for which a college degree is not required. Many others are underemployed, or working part-time or temporary jobs and internships.

About a third of recent graduates are still living with their parents...

* JEEZUS...

...with 17% saying they are financially dependent on their parents.

The U.S. Postal Service will begin to default on its financial obligations just over four months from now unless Congress takes action to relieve it of its obligation to pre-fund retiree health care accounts, its leader told lawmakers Tuesday.

(*SARCASTIC CLAP-CLAP-CLAP*)

USPS expects to post a net loss of $8.3 billion for this fiscal year, nearly as much as it lost last year.

(*MORE SARCASTIC CLAPPING*) AWW... WHAT'S SIXTEEN POINT SOMETHING BILLION - OVER TWO YEARS - BETWEEN FRIENDS... RIGHT? (*SNORT*)

And with its $15 billion debt limit due to be reached this year, more borrowing is not an option,

* WELL THANK GOD FOR SMALL FAVORS...!

[How's this for] nice timing:

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced last week that he plans to divert to California some $300 million in high-speed rail funds that Florida rejected.

* IRONICALLY... (WAIT FOR IT... WAIT FOR IT...)

California's [own] Legislative Analyst's Office released [their own] study last week warning the state legislature not to appropriate funds for the same project.

(*SNORT*)

The state legislature's fiscal watchdog says California's high-speed rail authority, which is responsible for planning and overseeing the project, has grossly underestimated the cost.

* WELL IMAGINE THAT... (*SNICKER*)

Congress ought to tell Mr. LaHood to devote the $300 million to reducing the federal deficit.

* HEAR! HEAR!

And California's legislature had better pull the plug on the project before it blows up on taxpayers.
