Barker's Newsbites: Wednesday, September 28, 2011

My wife is a moron...

...as, unfortunately, am I.

When we purchased our main TV we opted for the 5-year-renewable extended home service warranty.

Smart, right?! It was 10% of the purchase price... $120 if I recall... the key word being... renewable!

So... last night we come from visiting friends. I plop down in my chair and turn the TV on. The TV goes on... and then off.

Between last night and tonight nothing has changed. The TV is non-functioning.

Ah... but here's the kicker!

My wife... (*GRITTING MY TEETH*)... she who prides herself on her top-notch organizational skills... she who insists she and she alone possesses the skills and organizational abilities necessary to... oh... not lose important paperwork... seems to have "misplaced" the frigg'n warranty information and receipt..!!!

Oh... and here's the best part: While one may find supermarket receipts from 2003 in the kitchen junk draw and paid utility bills from the Age of Steam in my lovely bride's "box of records," somehow she can't even find the cancelled checks for the six month interest free payment period we took advantage of as sophisticated consumers when we bought the TV!

Ah... but I'm a fair and self-reflective man. If my wife is a moron (and indeed she is!) then I too am a moron for trusting her not to lose a "big ticket" receipt and warranty card.

Yes, I too bare responsibility if it turns out that the warranty has expired. (I put in a call to Sony this morning and they're going to get back to me once they track the purchase info down via the TV's serial number.)

All I can do now is wait and hope for the best! Worst case scenario... it's either pay to get this TV fixed or else just buy a new set... an upgrade while I'm at it.

To anyone reading this... take heed! If you have renewable extended warranties on any "big ticket" items, locate the warranty info right now and set up an auto-reminder so that you don't forget to renew!

* SOUND FAMILIAR, FOLKS?

A critically wounded 2-year-old girl was among four people shot Tuesday night in South Philadelphia when a mob of girls charged a house and gunfire erupted in a dispute stemming from a high school fight, police said.

* HMM... A "MOB OF GIRLS." PRIVATE SCHOOL GIRLS? SHOULD I BE PICTURING PARIS HILTON AND HER SISTER? HMM...

Police were called at 7:31 p.m. to the 1200 block of South Bucknell Street in response to a report of a melee and gunfire.Police were called at 7:31 p.m. to the 1200 block of South Bucknell Street in response to a report of a melee and gunfire.

The gunman was described as black, 25 to 30 years old, weighing about 210 pounds and standing about six feet tall, police said. He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans, and a fitted baseball cap. He was last seen running south on Bucknell.

* WAS HE ONE OF THE "MOB OF GIRLS?"

A 10-year-boy and a 59-year-old woman, who live in the same house as the toddler, also were wounded and were hospitalized in stable condition. A 25-year-old man was shot in the finger. The 2-year-old was shot in the stomach and hip areas and in a hand, police said. The boy was shot in the right calf. Both were being treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The woman was shot in the left leg, police said. She was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

* AMERICA 2011... THE AGE OF OBAMA.

Police spokesman Lt. Raymond Evers said a fight among girls from South Philadelphia High School led to another altercation and, ultimately, the shooting.

Girls involved in the fight showed up at a 12-year-old girl's house on Bucknell, Evers said. "The girls were pushing into the house," Evers said.

* AGAIN... SOUND FAMILIAR...? (*SMIRK*)

Some neighbors got involved, and one girl called an unidentified man, Evers said. A group of men arrived at the scene and the fighting escalated. Two men pulled out guns and one of them began firing.

Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey also responded to scene and denounced a culture of violence among young people.

(*SARCASTIC CLAP-CLAP-CLAP*) "YOUNG PEOPLE." YEAH. JUST... PLAIN... EVERYDAY... (*PAUSE*)... "YOUNG PEOPLE."

A neighbor said he saw "a pack of kids raising hell" down the block. Soon afterward, he heard gunshots. The neighbor said he called 911 and by the time he got off the phone, a patrol car had arrived. By that point, everyone involved in the melee had scattered. The officer "ran through the house and he came out with the baby" and sped off, the neighbor said.

If you thought the $535 million Solyndra scandal had chastened the fearless venture capitalists of the Obama Administration, think again. The Department of Energy shovelled out $1.1 billion in new loan guarantees to solar projects in Nevada and Arizona Wednesday, and more deals are pending before the $18 billion program funded by the 2009 stimulus expires Friday.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

* AGAIN, FOLKS... OTHER THAN VIA VIOLENCE... HOW TO STOP THE KLEPTOCRACY?

In a statement yesterday, Secretary Steven Chu said: "If we want to be a player in the global clean energy race, we must continue to invest in innovative technologies that enable commercial-scale deployment of clean, renewable power like solar." Translation: China is throwing taxpayer money into solar, so Americans should, too.

(*BANGING MY HEAD AGAINST THE WALL*)

We doubt most Americans want its government to get in the business of competing dollar-for-subsidy-dollar with the politically directed credit decisions of the Chinese Communist Party. If solar energy collection technology has a chance to be a commercial winner, someone will invest in it. If no one does, there may be a very good reason.

One of those [very good] reasons may be this: The Energy Information Administration estimates that new natural gas-fired plants will create electricity at a cost of $63.10 per megawatt hour, compared to the Administration's "green" favorites, offshore wind and solar thermal plants - like the one in Nevada funded yesterday - which cost $243.20 and $311.80.

* FOLKS... WE'RE TALKING ABOUT LEFTWING IDEOLOGUES DRUNK ON POWER.

Even if you believe in the "green job" mantra, here's some more math: Yesterday's $737 million loan guarantee to Tonopah Solar Energy will create "600 construction jobs and 45 permanent jobs," according to the company. The $337 million loan guarantee to Sempra Energy "will fund up to 300 construction jobs." That's $1.1 billion for 45 permanent jobs.

* THE MATH IS THE MATH!

By comparison, the proposed Keystone XL pipeline to carry crude oil from Western Canada to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast would create some 13,000 union jobs and around 118,000 "spin-off" jobs - if the U.S. State Department ever gets around to approving it. And taxpayers wouldn't have to risk a dime.

It's always possible that some of the Energy Department's latest investments will turn out to be winners, but if they do then the profits will go to the private shareholders.

If they fail like Solyndra, then taxpayers will get stuck with the bill.
