Jon Corzine, former technology executive Bernard Schwartz and banking executive James Staley were among 30 well-connected figures in the business and finance world who met with President Barack Obama at the White House in March for an unusual economic discussion organized by the Democratic National Committee.
The March 7 meeting in the Blue Room of the residence has drawn attention and criticism because most of the attendees were donors or fundraisers and the session was arranged by the DNC. Good-government advocates said hosting the event at the White House was ill-advised.

The U.S. is in the midst of an energy revolution, and we don't mean solar panels or wind turbines.
A new gusher of natural gas from shale has the potential to transform U.S. energy production - that is, unless politicians, greens and the industry mess it up.
Only a decade ago Texas oil engineers hit upon the idea of combining two established technologies to release natural gas trapped in shale formations. Horizontal drilling, in which wells turn sideways after a certain depth, opens up big new production areas; producers then use a 60-year-old technique called hydraulic fracturing (in which water, sand and chemicals are injected into the well at high pressure) to loosen the shale and release gas - and increasingly, oil.
* SOUNDS GOOD TO ME...!!!
As recently as 2000, shale gas was 1% of America's gas supplies; today it is 25%.
Prior to the shale breakthrough, U.S. natural gas reserves were in decline, prices exceeded $15 per million British Thermal Units, and investors were building ports to import liquid natural gas.
Today, proven reserves are the highest since 1971, prices have fallen close to $4 and ports are being retrofitted for LNG exports.
(*THUMBS UP*)
The shale boom is also reviving economically suffering parts of the country, while offering a new incentive for manufacturers to stay in the U.S.
(*CLAP-CLAP-CLAP*)
Pennsylvania's Department of Labor and Industry estimates fracking in the Marcellus shale formation, which stretches from upstate New York through West Virginia, has created 72,000 jobs in the Keystone State between the fourth quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2011.
* WOW...!
The Bakken formation, along the Montana-North Dakota border, is thought to hold four billion barrels of oil (the biggest proven estimate outside Alaska), and the drilling boom helps explain North Dakota's unemployment rate of 3.2%, the nation's lowest.

In deciding to pull all of the 30,000 troops from the surge out of Afghanistan, six weeks before Election Day 2012, but only 10,000 by year's end, President Obama has satisfied neither the generals nor the doves. He has, however, well served his political interests.
Sen. John McCain, citing some generals, is already saying that, with fewer troops and more missions per unit, U.S. casualties will rise.
(*SIGH*)
A smaller drawdown would have enraged the left, whose support is indispensable to Obama's winning a second term. A larger drawdown would have risked the "gains" made in Kandahar and Helmand and invited a revolt of the generals, some of whom might resign and denounce Obama for denying them the forces to prevail. So, our president did what comes naturally: cut the baby in half.
(*BANGING MY HEAD ON THE DESK*)
Strategically, removal of 30,000 troops in 15 months means that Obama has given up all hope of "victory" over the Taliban.
* NOT THAT THERE EVER WAS A HOPE OF "VICTORY" AS DEFINED BY THE NEOCONS. (YEAH... YOU READ THAT RIGHT...)
Obama's strategic goal now is the avoidance of defeat until the election of 2012 is behind him.
[B]y retaining 70,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan during the fighting season and political season of 2012, he has an insurance policy against a Taliban Tet-style offensive or major U.S. military reversal as voters begin to fill out absentee ballots.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a new report this week showing that the federal government’s publicly held debt would top 101% of GDP by 2021, more than the value of everything produced in this country over the course of a year. Think of it like owing more on your credit cards than your entire family income.
By 2035, the publicly held debt, CBO says, could top an almost unfathomable 190% of GDP. And that was the good news.
(*SNORT*)
Debt held by the public, which generated the headlines in the CBO report, is the type of government bonds that you - or the Chinese government - might own.
* UNFORTUNATELY... THIS IS ONLY ONE FACET OF TOTAL GOVERNMENT DEBT... (*SIGH*).. WHICH IS WHAT THE ABOVE "THAT'S THE GOOD NEWS" BLURB REFERS TO.
[T]here is [also] “intragovernmental” debt, which is essentially debt that the federal government owes to itself, such as debt it owes to the so-called Social Security Trust Fund.
If publicly held debt is like the money you borrowed from a bank, intragovernmental debt is like the money you swiped from your kid’s piggy bank. It may not be on your credit report, but you still have to pay it back.
* UNLESS OF COURSE YOU CAN'T. (*SHRUG*) IN WHICH CASE BOTH YOU AND THE KID ARE SCREWED.
* SO... YOU KNOW THAT $14.3 TRILLION DEBT NUMBER YOU'RE ALWAYS HEARING ABOUT? ADD $4.6 TRILLION TO THAT.
(The "good news" here is that intragovernmental debt is not projected to grow much in the future. The bad news is that that is because both Social Security and Medicare are already running deficits; there’s nothing left to steal.)
[T]here is also a third category of government debt: “implicit debt.”
(*BANGING MY HEAD AGAINST THE DESK*)
Implicit debt represents the unfunded obligations of programs such as Social Security and Medicare - the amount that those programs owe in benefits in excess of the amount of taxes that they expect to take in. Think of it as bills you know are going to come in next month but haven’t been delivered yet.
* THIS IS THE DEBT ALL DEMOCRATS - AND ALL RINOS - AND EVEN MOST "ESTABLISHMENT REPUBLICANS" WOULD HAVE YOU BELIEVE DOESN'T EXIST.
* IMPLICIT DEBT IS PERHAPS THE PRIMARY JUSTIFICATION FOR FAVORING MASS EXECUTIONS OF WASHINGTON POLITICIANS.
According to the annual report of the Social Security system’s trustees, that program’s unfunded liabilities now exceed $18 trillion.
Medicare is in even worse shape.
The most recent estimate of Medicare's finances, also released this week, warns that the program owes $36.8 trillion more in benefits that it is expected to be able to pay for.
* ALLOW ME TO REITERATE:
The most recent estimate of Medicare's finances, also released this week, warns that the program owes $36.8 trillion more in benefits that it is expected to be able to pay for.
(*GRITTING MY TEETH*)
* OH... AND IT GETS WORSE! READ ON!
And that is the optimistic outlook: It assumes that all the projected savings from President Obama’s health care reform actually happen as promised, something that even Medicare’s own actuaries are deeply skeptical of. If those savings don’t materialize, Medicare’s debt could actually top $90 trillion!
The CBO also contains bad news for those who believe that we can fix this "problem" simply by cutting “fraud, waste and abuse.” As CBO points out, the projected growth in the debt “is attributable entirely to increases in spending on several large mandatory programs: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and (to a lesser extent) insurance subsidies that will be provided through [ObamaCare].” There is simply no way to deal with our debt problems without reforming those entitlement programs.
(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)
We face a simple choice: Cut spending or face fiscal catastrophe. The question is: Is Washington listening?
A mob of about 40 [subhuman scum] stormed into the Sears department store on 69th Street [Upper Darby, PA] Thursday, and in a flash stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, officials said.
Police were able to round up 15 juveniles and one adult, 19, all from West Philadelphia.
“They came in on the El train and hit Sears,” police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said. “They stole sneakers, socks, watches, whatever they could get their hands on, and left.
“Imagine the guts of this gang of young hoodlums. One was 11 years old. The others arrested ranged from 12 to 16 years old. They planned this out earlier in the day on a social networking site. It was pre-planned. They got on the El, got off at 69th Street Terminal and walked up the hill to Sears.”
* FOLKS... AMERICAN SOCIETY IS BREAKING DOWN.
According to the affidavit, the Sears loss-prevention officer saw the mob enter the store at 7:09 p.m. on Thursday. The group then began taking merchandise off the shelves. “The loss-prevention officer watched the group enter the store together from the 69th Street entrance,” Police Superintendent Chitwood said. “It was fast. They ran out, leaving empty shoeboxes and store tags behind. Fortunately, no customers or store employees got hurt."
* THIS TIME... (*SIGH*)
“Due to the quick response by police, we were able to grab them up. They were heading back to the El train.”
According to Chitwood, the juveniles received citations for retail theft and will answer charges before the county’s juvenile justice system.
* DOES ANYONE BELIEVE THESE SAVAGES WILL GET ANYTHING OTHER THAN A SLAP ON THE WRIST? (*SHRUG*)
“The parents should be held accountable,” Chitwood said.
* MAYBE SO, BUT THAT'S A SEPARATE MATTER. ONE THING THAT'S INDISPUTABLE IS THAT THE SAVAGES THEMSELVES SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE.
"If I could," Chitwood continued, "I would charge the parents. Certainly, this is unacceptable behavior. It was intentionally planned earlier in the day to gather and go to Upper Darby to rob and pillage. There has got to be consequences, and I don’t mean a slap on the wrist. The county has got to send a strong message. This was a (pack) attack and will not be tolerated.”
* AGAIN... MY BET IS THAT WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE THERE WILL BE FEW MEANINGFUL CONSEQUENCES AND TAXPAYERS WILL BEAR MORE OF A COST THAN THE MISCREANTS WILL. (*SHRUG*)
On a balmy early Saturday summer evening, the U.S soccer team played for a prestigious championship in a U.S. stadium … and was smothered in boos.
Its goalkeeper was bathed in a chanted obscenity.
Even its national anthem was filled with the blowing of air horns and bouncing of beach balls.

* THE LAT REPORTER CONTINUES:
I've never heard more consistent loud cheering for one team here, from the air horns to the "Ole" chants with each Mexico pass, all set to the soundtrack of a low throbbing roar that began in the parking lot about six hours before the game and continued long into the night. Even when the U.S. scored the first two goals, the Mexico cheers stayed strong, perhaps inspiring El Tri to four consecutive goals against a U.S. team that seemed dazed and confused. Then when it ended, and the Mexican players had danced across the center of the field in giddy wonder while the U.S. players had staggered to the sidelines in disillusionment, the madness continued. ... And, yes, when the U.S. team was announced one final time, it was once again booed.

It was truly strange but, in the end, it indeed worked, perhaps because there is pride in living in one of the only countries where it could work. How many places are so diverse that it could fill football stadiums with folks whose roots are somewhere else? How many places offer such a freedom of speech that someone can display an American flag on their porch one day and cheer against the flag the next?
(*ROLLING MY EYES*)
* ME...? MY REACTION? TWO WORDS: MEXICAN SCUM. (OH... BUT NOT THIS GUY... KEEP READING!)
I hated it, but I loved it. I was felt as if I was in a strange place, and yet I felt right at home.
Certainly, for the U.S. team, it undoubtedly stinks. But then, well, to be honest, the team stinks.

[W]hen the stadium was finally cleared and the party had moved to the parking lot, the Rose Bowl field contained scattered patches of blue and gold celebration glitter. It was messy, and mangled, and beautiful.

Tonight, around 11 p.m., a group of at least 60-70 African American youth marched down one of the side streets (W. Thrush) to the 4 lane main drag (Sheridan). They were yelling threats to white residents. Things such as we need to kill alll the white people around here. They were physically intimidating anyone calling for help from the police. They were surrounding cars. Cars on the main drag had to slam on their brakes to either avoid the youth blocking not only all four lanes, but a large section of the side street as well. fights were breaking out among them. They were rushing residents who looked out their doors, going on to porches, yelling threats to people calling the police for help.
Cars were doing U turns on the streets just to avoid the mob, mostly male. One youth stated his grandfather was white and several assaulted him on the spot. One police officer answered the call. The youth split into two large groups, one heading north, the other south. They were also yelling racial threats to the police officer but he was outnumbered. Another police car did not show up until after the youth finally dispersed and the patty wagon (van) also eventually showed up.
Residents are very shaken, both black and white alike. This is the fifth large mob action in about a month with smaller groups of 10-12 are out threatening children and adults a few evenings a week or later into the night. The times vary, even occurring during the day. In talking to the police officer, they are short staffed. Residents were advised to simply keep inside and to lock their doors. In other words buckle down, it’s not even safe to sit on your porch or go into your yards.
Goalkeeper Tim Howard was still upset after the U.S. lost the Gold Cup final, but his strongest reaction had nothing to do with the four goals Mexico slotted in his net.
After El Tri's 4-2 victory at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., Howard blasted CONCACAF officials for conducting the title ceremony in Spanish.
"CONCACAF should be ashamed of themselves," Howard said. "I think it was a [expletive] disgrace that the entire post-match ceremony was in Spanish.

Today, intragovernmental debt exceeds $4.6 trillion.
(*SIGH*)
* To be continued...
* CONTINUING... (Part 2 of 2)
[T]here is also a third category of government debt: “implicit debt.”
* ALLOW ME TO REITERATE:
* ONE MORE TIME:
Medicare’s debt could actually top $90 trillion!
(*SIGH*)
Add it all up...
* $14.3 TRILLION + 4.6 TRILLION = $18.9 TRILLION...
* $18.9 TRILLION + (BEST CASE) $36.8 TRILLION = $55.7 TRILLION... HOWEVER... $18.9 TRILLION + (WORST CASE) $90 TRILLION = $108.9 TRILLION.

* THIS TIME... (*SIGH*)

* NOTICE "ITS" AS OPPOSED TO "OUR"? (APPARENTLY NEITHER THE REPORTER NOR EDITOR SEE THE IRONY.)
Most of these hostile visitors didn't live in another country. Most, in fact, were not visitors at all, many of them being U.S. residents whose lives are here but whose sporting souls remain elsewhere.
* NOTICE "U.S. RESIDENTS" - NOT AMERICANS. NOTE THE POETIC "THEIR LIVES ARE HERE." (*SMIRK*)
* THE LAT REPORTER CONTINUES:
* I KNOW... YOU AND I ARE RECOILING IN HORROR... THIS JERK REPORTER IS IN HIS GLORY. HERE... KEEP READING!
(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)
[W]hen the stadium was finally cleared and the party had moved to the parking lot, the Rose Bowl field contained scattered patches of blue and gold celebration glitter. It was messy, and mangled, and beautiful.
* IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A LOT MORE BEAUTIFUL IF I.C.E. HAD BEEN ON HAND CHECKING I.D.s WITH BUSES STANDING BY TO DEPORT THOSE WHO COULDN'T DEMONSTRATE U.S. CITIZENSHIP OR LEGAL RESIDENCE.
* AH... TO DREAM...

The U.S. military says two American troops have been killed in northern Iraq while conducting operations.
* TWO MORE AMERICANS THEY MEAN...
* TWO MORE AMERICANS CONDUCTING... UMM... I SUPPOSE... NON-WAR "OPERATIONS" - SINCE OBAMA HAS "ENDED" THE IRAQ WAR...
(*SHRUG*) (*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)
The deaths bring to 4,465 the number of American troops who have died in Iraq.
* BUT... BUT... BUT... OBAMA BROUGHT ALL OUR COMBAT TROOPS HOME... OR SO THE NEWSPAPERS AND THE REST OF THE MSM REPORTED AD NAUSEUM AT THE TIME.
