Barker's Newsbites: Friday, April 29, 2011

Yes... as a matter of fact... Western culture is superior!

Or at least it once was...

Folks, the West is in decline, but remember who we are... remember where we come from.

Will China dominate the globe before I am dead? Yes... there's a good chance of that.

Will America collapse more from inner rot than outside pressure? Yes... I worry so.

Are we still the same nation, the same People, who within living memory whipped Hitler and Tojo and then went on to face down and ultimately defeat the Soviet Union?

No... sadly we're not.

Is our culture what it once was...? No. For me and many of you it's not really even our culture anymore... is it?

Right is wrong; wrong is right. The inmates are running the asylum.

No, my friends, this is not a white supremacist screed. There is much we can learn from other cultures, other societies. Surely since Friday, March 11, 2011 - the day the tsunami hit Japan - I've noted on numerous occasions here and in myriad other publications my view that had a similar disaster struck the Washington D.C. corridor of our Eastern Seaboard the social consequences would have dwarfed the physical damage.

No, my friends, Western culture does not hold all the answers. Our present twisted societal norms indeed often make me ashamed of present "Western society."

Still... when all is said and done... when all the stains upon our history are accounted for... it seems to me that "traditional" Western Anglo-Saxon culture still represents the height of human ideals - the quest for individual freedom... liberty of the spirit.

My friends, these ideals - Western culture itself - seem destined to crumble around us; at least that is my fear.

My friends... remember who we are... remember from whom we came from... fight back.

http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/04/27/superman-renounces-us-citizenship/

After recently undertaking a journey to walk - not fly - across the United States in the "Grounded" storyline and reconnect with the country and everyday Americans, Superman appears to be taking another step that could have major implications for his national identity: in Action Comics #900...

...Superman announces that he is going to give up his U.S. citizenship.

(*SIGH*)

Despite very literally being an alien immigrant, Superman has long been seen as a patriotic symbol of "truth, justice, and the American way," from his embrace of traditional American ideals to the iconic red and blue of his costume. What it means to stand for the "American way" is an increasingly complicated thing, however, both in the real world and in superhero comics, whose storylines have increasingly seemed to mirror current events and deal with moral and political complexities rather than simple black and white morality.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

While this wouldn't be this first time a profoundly American comic book icon disassociated himself from his national identity (remember when Captain America became Nomad?), this could be a very significant turning point for Superman if its implications carry over into other storylines.

* YA THINK...?!

Indeed, simply saying that "truth, justice and the American way [is] not enough anymore" is a pretty startling statement from the one man who has always represented those values the most.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

* FOLKS... (*SIGH*)... LET'S HOPE THAT THIS IS JUST A PUBLICITY STUNT.

First-time claims rose 25,000 to 429,000 in the week ending April 23 from a revised 404,000 the previous week, the labour department said...

* WAIT FOR IT... WAIT FOR IT...

...surprising economists who had predicted claims would fall to 392,000.

(*SNORT*) "SURPRISING ECONOMISTS," HUH? (*SMIRK*)

It was the third week in a row that claims came in above the 400,000 level that economists say is consistent with sustainable job growth.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/apr/28/feds-sting-amish-farmer-selling-raw-milk-locally/

A yearlong sting operation, including aliases, a 5 a.m. surprise inspection and surreptitious purchases from an Amish farm in Pennsylvania, culminated in the federal government announcing this week that it has gone to court to stop Rainbow Acres Farm from selling its contraband to willing customers in the Washington area.

The product in question: unpasteurized milk.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

* FOLKS... TELL ME WE'RE NOT LIVING IN THE ALICE IN WONDERLAND VERSION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA...

(*SIGH*)

It’s a battle that’s been going on behind the scenes for years, with natural foods advocates arguing that raw milk, as it’s also known, is healthier than the pasteurized product, while the Food and Drug Administration says raw milk can carry harmful bacteria such as salmonella, E. coli and listeria.

* YA KNOW WHAT, THEN?! LET THE FDA MANDATE WARNING LABELS!

“It is the FDA’s position that raw milk should never be consumed,” said Tamara N. Ward, spokeswoman for the FDA...

* SO LET THE FDA HAVE THEIR "POSITION," LET THEM MANDATE A WARNING LABEL, AND THEN LET AMERICANS DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES IF THEY WANT TO PURCHASE FRESH MILK OR NOT!

* JEEZUS F--KING CHRIST... (*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

“I look at this as the FDA is in cahoots with the large milk producers,” said Karin Edgett, a D.C. resident who buys directly from Rainbow Acres. “I don’t want the FDA and my tax dollars to go to shut down a farm that hasn’t had any complaints against it. They’re producing good food, and the consumers are extremely happy with it.”

(The FDA’s actions stand in contrast to other areas where the Obama administration has said it will take a hands-off approach to violations of the law, including the use of medical marijuana in states that have approved it, and illegal-immigrant students and youths, whom the administration said recently will not be targets of their enforcement efforts.)

http://www.france24.com/en/20110428-tornadoes-whipped-wind-not-climate-officials

U.S. meteorologists warned Thursday it would be a mistake to blame climate change for a seeming increase in tornadoes in the wake of deadly storms that have ripped through the US south.

Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), also dismissed...climate change as a factor in the deadly tornadoes: "Actually what we're seeing is springtime," he said.

(*SNORT*) (*SMILE*) (*AMUSED CHUCKLE*)

[S]tronger-than-usual tornadoes affecting the southern states were actually predicted from examining the planet's climatological patterns, specifically those related to the La Nina phenomenon. "We knew it was going to be a big tornado year," [Fugate] said, but the key to that tip-off was unrelated to climate change, "it is related to the natural fluctuations of the planet."

As dry conditions and gusty winds whip up new wildfires in parched Texas, Gov. Rick Perry Thursday blasted the Obama Administration for failing to issue a disaster declaration for the state...

"You see hundreds of thousands of acres of Texas burning and you know that there will soon be emergency declarations, and we did that now a couple of weeks ago, but still no response from this administration," Perry told 1200 WOAI's Michael Board after addressing the Texas Emergency Management Conference in San Antonio. "There is a point in time where you say, hey, what's going on here," Perry said. "You have to ask why are you taking care of Alabama and other states? I know our letter didn't get lost in the mail."

The White House says President Obama will visit Alabama, hard hit by tornadoes Wednesday, later today.

Perry requested a federal declaration of emergency for Texas on April 16, as wildfires began to rage across the entire state. So far, the request has not been answered...

http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/3-persons-convicted-terrorism-related-ca

Three people convicted of crimes as a result of a terrorism-related investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) were later naturalized as U.S. citizens by the Obama administration, according to federal auditors.

“One of the individuals was naturalized in late 2009. The other two were naturalized in 2010,” says the e-mail from the GAO.

The March 2011 audit (released on April 21, 2011) by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), entitled Criminal Alien Statistics: Information on Incarcerations, Arrests and Costs, shows that three individuals were among “defendants where the investigation involved an identified link to international terrorism but they were charged with violating other statutes [not directly related to terrorism], including fraud, immigration, drugs, false statements, and general conspiracy charges,” referred by DOJ as Category II terrorism-related cases.

“Based upon our analysis of USCIS and DOJ data, three of the individuals on the DOJ list received U.S. citizenship after their convictions,” stated the GAO audit report. “Two were convicted of unlawful production of an identity document and one was convicted of transferring funds out of the country in violation of U.S. sanctions.”

* AND YET... (*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

“USCIS determined that each of these individuals were able to demonstrate good moral character within the required period of time and met all other requirements for naturalization,” stated the GAO.

Suffering its worst monthly performance since September 2010, the dollar weakened to a new 2½-year low Friday as investors turned increasingly pessimistic about the U.S. economy and the policy prescriptions designed to improve it. (Longstanding worries among market participants about the Federal Reserve's ultra-loose monetary policy have converged with growing concerns about the widening U.S. fiscal imbalance.)

* IN PLAIN ENGLISH, OBAMA AND BERNANKE ARE DESTROYING THE NATION'S ECONOMY! DELIBERATELY!

"A weaker dollar is a consequence of what [policy makers] are doing," said Peter Schiff, president of Euro Pacific Capital and a critic of the Fed. He expects the euro to retest its record high against the dollar above $1.60 within the coming months, if not weeks.

Friday's figures followed a government report this week that showed the economy slowed sharply in the first three months of 2011.

In a pants-on-fire moment, the White House press office today denied anyone there had issued threats to remove Carla Marinucci and possibly other Hearst reporters from the press pool covering the President in the Bay Area.

Chronicle editor Ward Bushee called the press office on its fib:

"Sadly, we expected the White House to respond in this manner based on our experiences yesterday. It is not a truthful response. It follows a day of off-the-record exchanges with key people in the White House communications office who told us they would remove our reporter, then threatened retaliation to Chronicle and Hearst reporters if we reported on the ban, and then recanted to say our reporter might not be removed after all. The Chronicle's report is accurate. If the White House has indeed decided not to ban our reporter, we would like an on-the-record notice that she will remain the San Francisco print pool reporter. I was on some of those calls and can confirm Ward's statement."

* WOW...
