There may be less than meets the eye to President Barack Obama's statements Monday night that NATO is taking over from the U.S. in Libya and that U.S. action is limited to defending people under attack there by Moammar Gadhafi's forces.

In transferring command and control to NATO, the U.S. is turning the reins over to an organization dominated by the U.S., both militarily and politically.

In essence, the U.S. runs the show that is taking over running the show.

(*SMIRK*)

And the rapid advance of rebels in recent days strongly suggests they are not merely benefiting from military aid in a defensive crouch, but rather using the multinational force in some fashion - coordinated or not - to advance an offensive.

* QUESTION BEGGING A STRAIGHT ANSWER: ARE WE SUPPLYING THE REBELS WITH ARMS OR CONSPIRING WITH OTHERS TO SUPPLY THE REBELS WITH ARMS?

* LET'S GO OVER A FEW OF THE TRUTHS THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NOTES IN THIS FACT CHECK ARTICLE:

* TRUE...

A Canadian three-star general was selected to be in charge of all NATO operations in Libya.

* ALSO TRUE...

His boss, the commander of NATO's Allied Joint Force Command Naples, is an American admiral, and the admiral's boss is the supreme allied commander Europe, a post always held by an American.

* HMM... THEN THERE'S THIS:

The United States supplies 22% of NATO's budget, almost as much as the next largest contributors - Britain and France - combined. ... NATO partners are bringing more into the fight. But the same "unique capabilities" that made the U.S. the inevitable leader out of the gate will continue to be in demand. They include a range of attack aircraft, refueling tankers that can keep aircraft airborne for lengthy periods, surveillance aircraft that can detect when Libyans even try to get a plane airborne, and, as Obama said, planes loaded with electronic gear that can gather intelligence or jam enemy communications and radars.

* DON'T FORGET THE TOMAHAWK MISSILES FIRED FROM U.S. NAVEL SHIPS/SUBMARINES!

* OTHER FACTS:

Mass violence against civilians has also been escalating elsewhere, without any U.S. military intervention anticipated. More than 1 million people have fled the Ivory Coast, where the U.N. says forces loyal to the incumbent leader, Laurent Gbagbo, have used heavy weapons against the population and more than 460 killings have been confirmed of supporters of the internationally recognized president, Alassane Ouattara. The Obama administration says Gbagbo and Gadhafi have both lost their legitimacy to rule. But only one is under attack from the U.S.

* OR PUT ANOTHER WAY... NO ONE IS BEING "RESCUED" BY THE AMERICAN MILITARY.

[President] Obama will spend Tuesday night at two different fundraising events in Harlem.

* I SUPPOSE SPENDING HIS TIME NEGOTIATING WITH REPUBLICANS OVER THE BUDGET WOULD BE TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR.

* OH... I ALMOST FORGOT! THAT'S A TASK HE'S DELEGATED TO BIDEN! NOW WHERE'S JOE AGAIN...? OH... YEAH... SKIING IN ASPEN.

* FOLKS... AGAIN... YOU JUST CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP...!!!

The donor outreach is only the end of a long Tuesday for Obama in New York. After he arrives this afternoon, the president will hold individual interviews with ABC, CBS and NBC that will be aired on their evening news programs as he tries to explain his Libya policy.

* SINCE MSNBC IS AN ARM OF NBC THIS MEANS THAT THEY'RE THERE IN SPIRIT. NO FOX...? (NO CNN EITHER, BUT CNN's RATINGS ARE NOWHERE NEAR FOX's; CNN WAS NO DOUBT LEFT OUT AS A MEANS OF "JUSTIFYING" LEAVING FOX OUT OF THE LOOP.

Obama will also attend a event at the Union Nations to dedicate a building in honor of Ron Brown, the longtime Democratic party official who was serving as Secretary of Commerce in the Clinton administration until he died in a plane crash in 1996.

* "HONOR" RON BROWN, HUH?

* JUST TO WHET YOUR APPETITES.

http://washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/beltway-confidential/2011/03/schumer-coordinates-dem-budget-attack-gop

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., a member of the Democratic Senate leadership, got on a conference call with reporters Tuesday morning without realizing the reporters were already listening in. Schumer thought he was on a private line with four Democratic senators who were to talk with reporters about the current budget stalemate.

Schumer instructed the group, made up of Sens. Barbara Boxer of California, Tom Carper of Delaware, Ben Cardin of Maryland and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, to tell reporters that the GOP is refusing to negotiate.

He told the group to make sure they label the GOP spending cuts as "extreme."

"I always use extreme, Schumer said. "That is what the caucus instructed me to use."

Someone must have finally told Schumer that the media were listening and he stopped talking mid-sentence.

* FOLKS... YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS SHIT UP.

* SUBTITLE THIS ONE: "AIN'T IT GRAND WHEN THE NYT TELLS YOU WHAT I'VE BEEN TELLING YOU FOR YEARS?!" (*SMIRK*)

As an expected increase in the cost of raw materials looms for late summer, consumers are beginning to encounter shrinking food packages.

* DUH!

Chips are disappearing from bags, candy from boxes and vegetables from cans.

(*SMIRK*)

[C]ompanies in recent months have tried to camouflage price increases by selling their products in tiny and tinier packages. So far, the changes are most visible at the grocery store, where shoppers are paying the same amount, but getting less.

* "...IN RECENT MONTHS.." HUH? (*SNICKER*) (*SNORT*)

Five or so years ago [a Houston, TX mom,] Lisa Stauber, bought 16-ounce cans of corn. Then they were 15.5 ounces, then 14.5 ounces, and the size is still dropping. “The first time I’ve ever seen an 11-ounce can of corn at the store was about three weeks ago, and I was just floored,” she said. “It’s sneaky, because they figure people won’t know.”

“Whole wheat pasta had gone from 16 ounces to 13.25 ounces,” she said. "Boxes of baby wipes went to 72 from 80; sugar was stacked in 4-pound, not 5-pound, bags," she [further noted].

A can of Chicken of the Sea albacore tuna is now packed at 5 ounces, instead of the 6-ounce version still on some shelves...

* WHERE HAVE THESE CLOWNS BEEN? TUNA CANS WENT TO FIVE OUNCES - A 20% CUT IN PRODUCT SIZE - WELL OVER A YEAR AGO. AND WORSE, IT'S ACROSS THE BOARD ON ALL NAME BRANDS AND MOST STORE BRANDS! IF THESE COMPANIES WERE FIXING PRICES DIRECTLY THEY'D BE INVESTIGATED, BUT BECAUSE THEY'RE FIXING PRICES VIA FIXING PACKAGE SIZE - CONSPIRING TO FIX PACKAGE SIZE I'LL BET - THEY'RE GETTING AWAY WITH IT!

Bags of Doritos, Tostitos and Fritos now hold 20% fewer chips than in 2009...

* AGAIN WITH THAT 20% HIT... (*SIGH*)

The standard size for Edy’s ice cream went from 2 liters to 1.5 in 2008. And Tropicana shifted to a 59-ounce carton rather than a 64-ounce one last year, after the cost of oranges rose.

[P]rices for energy and for raw materials like corn, cotton and sugar [are] creeping up and expected to surge later this year...

[New York City's] MTA may soon put welfare recipients to work scrubbing and cleaning the subways.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority wants to revive its participation in the city's Work Experience Program - which makes the unemployed toil for their benefit checks.

Ready for another cash for clunkers program?

It looks like General Motors is attempting to replace it's own consumer incentives with tax payer money.

(*SIGH*)

The Obama administration and their friends on Capitol Hill are floating around a proposal to change the $7500 tax credit for "green" vehicles. (This change can be found not only in President Barack Obama's budget but also a bill proposed by Senator Debbie Stabenow, Michigan Democrat.) The proposed Obama Budget, changes the existing $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit into a rebate that will be available to all consumers immediately at the point of sale.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

Essentially, if one were to buy a $41,000 Chevy Volt, the buyer gets a $7,500 coupon, so the final price is $33,500.

It is pretty convenient that Senator Stabenow (D-MI), who represents a state where GM is headquartered, is pushing a bill that is also supported by Edison Electric Institute, whose president was loaned a Chevy Volt, Eaton Corp: the sole American producer of car recharge systems, and Battery Electric Vehicle Coalition, a lobbying group for the electric car industry.

An Interior Department report to be released Tuesday says more than two-thirds of offshore oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico are sitting idle.

* SO, FOLKS... HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY PER GALLON THE LAST TIME YOU PUT GAS IN THE TANK?

According to the report, obtained by The Associated Press, those inactive swaths of the Gulf could potentially hold more than 11 billion barrels of oil and 50 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

* I PAID $3.29 IN NEW JERSEY - WHICH HAS SOME OF THE LOWEST GAS PRICES IN THE NATION; UP BY ME (HERE IN ORANGE COUNTRY, NY) REGULAR IS $3.57 PER GALLON.

The report also shows that 45% of all onshore oil and gas leases are inactive.

(*SARCASTIC CLAP-CLAP-CLAP*)

* WAY TO GO, OBAMA! THAT'LL TEACH US!

The White House says Obama will address his plans for the country's energy security during a speech in Washington Wednesday.

* OH... GOODY.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/28/diplomats-meet-italy-gaddafi-escape

Efforts appear to be under way to offer Muammar Gaddafi a way of escape from Libya, with Italy saying it was trying to organise an African haven for him, and the U.S. signalling it would not try to stop the dictator from fleeing.

Italy offered to broker a ceasefire deal in Libya, involving asylum for Gaddafi in an African country.

A senior American official signalled that a solution in which Gaddafi flees to a country beyond the reach of the international criminal court (ICC), which is investigating war crimes charges against him, would be acceptable to Washington, pointing out that Barack Obama had repeatedly called on Gaddafi to leave.

* IF TRUE... (*SIGH*)

"I can't say I know of active efforts to find him a place to go, but I would not say it has been ruled out," the official said. "The ICC has said it will ready to pursue the case, but there are also the rules of the ICC," he added, pointing out that some countries do not recognise the court's jurisdiction.

* AGAIN... IF TRUE...

* IF THIS IS TRUE, THEN BASICALLY THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION IS CONSPIRING WITH ITALY AND OTHERS TO ALLOW GADDAFI TO ESCAPE THE JUSTICE THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS BEEN CLAIMING TO BE FOR ALL ALONG.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)
