Despite a massive Los Angeles police presence Thursday night, sporadic violence broke out near Staples Center after the Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.

Crowds hurled bottles and other objects at police, smashed marquees, jumped on vehicles, broke windows, and set rubbish dumpsters and vehicles on fire along Figueroa Street north of Staples Center and on Flower Street.

* AMERICA 2010.

Police fired non-lethal rounds to disperse the crowd at Figueroa and Venice Boulevard after several small fires were set, as well as at 11th and Hope streets. At 7th and Flower, a car believed to be a taxicab was engulfed in flames.

* WHAT THE COPS SHOULD HAVE DONE IS BROKEN UP THE RIOTING BY BEATING THE HELL OUT OF THESE ANIMALS - USING LETHAL FORCE IF NEED BE.

Several dozen people rushed onto the 10 Freeway near Figueroa and Washington boulevards, disrupting traffic, the California Highway Patrol said.

* HEY... IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING A RENTAL CAR DOWN THE 10... (*GRIN*) (*SHRUGGING WITH A TWINKLE IN MY EYE*)

At 8th and Figueroa, Lakers fans and a phalanx of more than two dozen police, wearing riot gear and wielding batons, faced off. The stand-off began when a bunch of fans tore down a traffic sign and then ripped out two newspaper stands and lighted the papers on fire. When the police marched up Figueroa, about two dozen abreast, the crowd slowly receded. Some people were throwing energy drinks, which had been passed out for free after the win. Others posed for photos in front of the line of police.

A group of overzealous fans began smashing the windows of a black Honda and trying to turn it over.

* "FANS," HUH...??? HOW'BOUT "ANIMALS!"

* "OVERZEALOUS FANS...???" SERIOUSLY...??? THE EDITOR OF THIS PIECE SHOULD BE FIRED.

In 2000, the LAPD was criticized after mayhem erupted following the Lakers' championship victory. Roaming mobs torched vehicles and looted and vandalized businesses near Staples Center with seeming impunity. The department fared better after last year's championship but still needed a few hours to gain control of rowdy fans.

* AGAIN WITH THIS "ROWDY FANS" BULLSHIT. UNFRIGG'NBELIEVEABLE!

Lobbyists for BP hosted at least 53 fundraising parties for lawmakers and candidates in recent years - four of them since the explosion and oil spill at a BP-run oil drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico, according to a watchdog group's analysis.

Nine of the 11 known fundraisers this year were hosted by lobbyist Tony Podesta or other lobbyists for his firm, the Podesta Group, who represent the company as well as many other interests.

* PODESTA...? PODESTA...??? NOW WHERE DO I KNOW THAT NAME FROM...??? (*PAUSE*) OH, YES... BROTHER TO JOHN!

* OH... AND IN CASE ANYONE FEARS I'D RESORT TO "GUILT BY ASSOCIATION," CHECK OUT TONY'S BIO. (*SMIRK*)

* OH, YEAH... AND WHILE YOU'RE CHECKING BIOGRAPHIES... CHECK OUT TONY'S WIFE HEATHER'S BIO! (*SNORT*)

* MY ONLY POINT, FOLKS... THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS IF ANYTHING FAR MORE DEEPLY ENTRENCHED WITH CORPORATE FAT CAT INTERESTS THAN THE GOP COULD EVER DREAM OF BEING!

* MY POINT... THE BLATANT HYPOCRISY... (*SIGH*)

Since the Deepwater Horizon rig's explosion in the gulf on April 20, here are the fundraisers by lobbyists who represent BP: Paul Brathwaite and Cristina Antelo, who both lobby for the Podesta Group, were among numerous hosts for a May 26 party benefiting CHC-BOLD PAC, a PAC for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus; Tim Glassco, also a lobbyist for the Podesta Group, was a host of a "young professionals" happy hour on May 25 for Rep. Glenn Nye (D-Va.); [and] Podesta and his wife, Heather, hosted an April 28 breakfast for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla).

(*SMIRK*)

Other oil and gas concerns have raised cash for lawmakers, too, sometimes with uncomfortable timing. On May 12, executives including BP's chairman, Lamar McKay, Transocean chief executive Steve Newman and Halliburton's Timothy Probert appeared before a hearing in the House Energy and Commerce Committee to discuss responsibility for their respective roles in the Deepwater Horizon spill. About an hour earlier, House Republicans had gathered a few blocks away for an "oil and gas breakfast" fundraiser with industry members to benefit Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Tex).

Dan Meyer, a lobbyist for the Duberstein Group, was a host of an April 29 event for Carly Fiorina, who was seeking the GOP nomination for a California U.S. Senate seat.

* SEE... I DON'T HOLD ANYTHING BACK. THE POINT IS, THOUGH, THAT SUPPOSEDLY REPUBLICANS ARE THE "PARTY OF BUSINESS," THE "PARTY OF BIG OIL" WHILE THE DEMS REPRESENT... er... THE INTERESTS OF... er... "THE LITTLE PEOPLE." (*WINK*) YEAH... THAT'S IT... "THE LITTLE PEOPLE." SO MUCH FOR THAT OLD WIVES TALE, HUH?!

Fears of violence prompted a U.S. State Department recommendation that Americans avoid downtown Toronto next week because the large-scale demonstrations around the June 26-27 summit of the G20 rich and emerging nations could turn nasty.

* ARE YOU FOLKS SEEING A TREND HERE...??? MEXICO... LA... TORONTO... (*SHRUG*) FOLKS... WHEN AND WHERE THE RULE OF LAW IS THREATENED THEN CIVILIZATION ITSELF IS THREATENED.

Nongovernmental groups have promised peaceful protests, but previous summits have attracted violent groups intent on disrupting the meetings or fighting with police. Organizers admit anarchist groups may join these demonstrations too.

* ANARCHIST GROUPS... (*ROLLING MY EYES*) IF IT WEREN'T SO SCARY FOR THE FOLKS HAVING TO DEAL DIRECTLY WITH THIS IT WOULD BE LAUGHABLE.

The security bill for the summit is already over C$1 billion ($970 million)...

* AS I WAS SAYING ABOUT "NOT LAUGHABLE..." (*SIGH*) (BTW... WOULDN'T YOU LOVE TO SEE HOW THEY COME UP WITH A FIGURE LIKE THAT? I MEAN... THINK ABOUT IT... HOW COULD THAT POSSIBLY BE EVEN CLOSE TO ACCURATE? IT'S RIDICULOUS ON THE FACE OF IT! WE'RE TALKING OVERTIME PAY AND OTHER MANPOWER AND EQUIPMENT COSTS. THINK ABOUT IT... (*SIGH*)

With the support of Sen. Chris Dodd, D.-Conn., the federal government has awarded $54 million to Connecticut's politically well-connected Mohegan Indian tribe, which operates one of the highest grossing casinos in the U.S.

* I DON'T CREATE THE NEWS, FOLKS - I JUST PASS IT ON! (*SIGH*)

Lynn Malerba, chairwoman of the Mohegan Tribal Council, defended the award of the stimulus loan to the tribe, and said that every member of Connecticut's seven-member Congressional delegation except one had provided assistance in securing the funds. "The whole Connecticut delegation, I think aside from [Rep.] Jim Himes, who was traveling, sent a letter in support."

An aide to Sen. Joseph Lieberman said the senator "is supportive of any constituent that applies for federal funding that will create jobs."

* FOLKS... UNDERSTAND... THESE BASTARDS ACTUALLY BELIEVE IT'S THEIR JOB TO STEER YOUR MONEY AND MINE TO INTERESTS LIKE THIS. THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN.

* PEGGY NOONAN MAKES SOME EXCELLENT POINTS...

It isn't Mr. Obama's fault that an oil rig blew in the Gulf and a gusher resulted. ... But the lack of adequate federal government response appropriately redounds on him. In a Wall Street Journal investigation published Thursday, reporters Jeffrey Ball and Jonathan Weisman wrote the federal government at first moved quickly, but soon "faltered."

"The federal government, which under the law is in charge of fighting large spills, had to make things up as it went along."

The first weekend in May, when water was rough, contractors hired by BP to lay boom "mostly stayed ashore," according to a local official. "Shrimpers took matters into their own hands, laying 18,000 feet of boom," compared to about 4,000 feet by BP's contractors.

The president's failure to turn things around Tuesday night with a speech damaged his reputation as a man whose rhetorical powers are such that he can turn things around with a speech. He lessened his own mystique. ... Two growing weaknesses showed up in small phrases. The president said he had consulted among others "experts in academia" on what to do about the calamity. This while noting, again, that his energy secretary has a Nobel Prize.

There is a growing meme that Mr. Obama is too impressed by credentialism...by those who hold forth in the faculty lounge... He should be more impressed by those with real-world experience. It was the "small people" in the shrimp boats who laid the boom.

And when speaking of why proper precautions and safety measures were not in place, the president sternly declared, "I want to know why." But two months in he should know. And he should be telling us. Such empty sternness is . . . empty.

President Obama went to the groundbreaking of a road project in Columbus, Ohio, Friday to show that his massive stimulus package is still churning out jobs - a "good news" story that was anything but for some construction workers who were trying to figure out how to make up for the payday they lost due to the president's visit.

The workers were told not to report to their construction project at a nearby hospital Friday, because the Secret Service was shutting it down for security reasons. They also were told that they would not get paid for the forced day off.

(*JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)

"The bosses told us we weren't working because the president is coming, and we are wondering why," construction worker George Harrison told WBNS-10TV. "That's $200 we are missing out on..."

(*AGAIN...JUST SHAKING MY HEAD*)
