Weekend Newsbites: Sat. & Sun., Nov. 29 & 30, 2014

Picked up the tree yesterday...

Found Made in America Christmas Cards... $7 for a 34-pack at Odd Lots! While there, also picked up a 200-ft. roll of Christmas wrapping paper - also Made in America!

Since we had no Thanksgiving leftovers, last night's dinner was "Bill's Hot Pastrami Reubens," only instead of being served open-faced on rye or pumpernickel bread, I serve mine "hero style" on Cuban bread! (I only ate HALF of mine... therefore... I have today's lunch pre-made!)

A fair amount of Facebooking yesterday but no newsbiting; I'll try and make amends today!

Anyway... off to it!

A central argument in Obama’s defense of the most extensive overhaul to the immigration system in decades...

* THEY MEAN OBAMA'S UNCONSTITUTIONAL ACTIONS... WHICH MUST NOT STAND!

...was that those [illegally] given reprieves from deportation would not qualify for ObamaCare benefits.

The president reminded critics that Dream Act-eligible immigrants previously granted deportation deferrals could not enroll in federal health exchanges.

* FOLKS... THE DREAM ACT NEVER PASSED...!!! IT NEVER BECAME A LAW...!!!

* FOLKS... SOME BELIEVE I'M SIMPLY BEING PEDANTIC. I ASSURE YOU - I'M NOT! I KEEP ON POINTING OUT HOW THE MEDIA MANIPULATES READERS BY POINTING TO ACTUAL EXAMPLES! SERIOUSLY, FOLKS... HOPEFULLY ALL OF YOU KNEW THAT THE DREAM ACT WAS NEVER ACTUALLY PASSED BY BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESSED AND SIGNED INTO LAW... BUT I ASSURE YOU... TENS OF MILLIONS OF YOUR FELLOW CITIZENS HAVE NO CLUE AND FROM READING THIS WOULD NATURALLY ASSUME THAT OBAMA WAS SIMPLY RIFFING OFF EXISTING LAW!

However, Obama was less eager to wade into the debate about what to do with newly protected immigrants now paying into Social Security. He didn’t address the matter while outlining his immigration plan in a prime-time address to the nation, but White House aides later confirmed GOP suspicions about how Obama’s unilateral move would affect retirement benefits.

“It is a bit of surprise,” said Michael Tanner, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute who focuses on entitlement programs. “For a long time, there was an argument made by the administration that [undocumented immigrants] would not be eligible for such benefits. It does seem to be a contradiction.”

“It’s ObamaCare all over again, ‘If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor,” one House GOP leadership aide told the Washington Examiner. “Obama was very clear on this issue. He said no benefits. What the president says just isn’t credible. That couldn’t be any more obvious by now.”

For Republicans, this debate is about far more than just Social Security. It fits into the broader narrative of painting the president as unwilling to spotlight an unpopular provision of his agenda until after it has been enacted.

* SHOULDN'T IT BE "FOR AMERICANS..." (NOT SIMPLY "FOR REPUBLICANS"?)

The administration says Obama’s move is sound fiscal policy, that it makes sense to grow the tax base. They also argue that it would be unfair to force people to pay into Social Security and not reap the same benefits as everybody else.

* UNFAIR FOR WHOM...?!?! THEY'RE HERE ILLEGALLY! LET 'EM PAY INTO SOCIAL SECURITY AND LET 'EM SUBSIDIZE AMERICANS! (JUST DON'T LET 'EM RECEIVE THE REWARDS LATER ON!)

Okay, this one I haven't been following. Is Obama suggesting non-citizens get benefits? Or those that become citizens will?

Basically that's where logic takes us. Either via further action down the road (presidential... congressional...) those allowed to stay and work will be included in ObamaCare and Social Security (and indeed all welfare program) or else the courts will intervene and rule that via Obama's actions and Congress' unwillingness to override them this makes the non-citizens allowed to stay and worked defacto legal residents with all the same right as "regular" green card holders.
